KIndle Fire

Has anyone received their Kindle Fire yet and done a GS build on it? Hopefully mine will arrive tomorrow! Can't wait. Played with one last night at Target and I liked it.

I have one of my apps resized for the Kindle Fire just waiting to go.

Butterbean got her Kindle Fire and I wasn't informed :-) Shame on her :-)

So Butterbean....how is it overall? Let me know when you get the viewer working. I will probably be in the same boat as you tomorrow if you can't get the viewer working.

Keep me posted TShirtBooth when you do get yours.

Hey Greg!! I DID get a kindle fire and I love it!

I think it's much smoother than the Nook color (the old model) and the viewer installed just perfectly onto the device, but it won't sync a game via wifi through the creator, so I need to get a micro USB cable and test my games that way.

    Very exciting!

Also, to install the Viewer via the Kindle you can do it by opening up the .apk file via your gmail account.

On the Nook you cannot do this, and have to install the viewer through the terminal. I may do a tutorial on this for people that are snagging a nook color, and how to upload .apk files, and the viewer for the Nook Color. It can be very daunting!

hey butterbean or whoever has a kindle fire is it the ipad killer

Installed GS through my email as well. The games i was testing seemed to run kinda laggy! Do the games need to be tweaked for the Fire or will a GS updater fix it or is it the Fire itself?
  • fzeedfzeed Member Posts: 247
I don't understand your question. I have a usb plugged in (Best Buy giving them away free) and connected to wifi. I launch the GS on the Fire, Launch GS creator, load game, then click Preview on Android. The game runs fine (my earlier post was about one specific project that lagged) The creator is giving me all the feedback, FPS, RAM, etc....
Are you saying without usb cable the viewer doesn't work? I'll try now with wifi only. Wifi only and everything works (just like on the iPad) i get all my feedback.
The only setting i changed (i just bought it 30 min ago) was the "trust sources other then amazon" or what ever it says"
Is it possible she is on wrong wifi network???

My only complaint so far is, my more bigger complicated projects, actually crash the viewer the first time trying to run, the second time it runs.

I'm getting mine tomorrow too. Since you can install the viewer by opening the apk file through gmail, I'm assuming you can install your completed game like an adhoc version?

I thought you would have to sideload apps, but it would be easier to use gmail.

Everyone is saying that since amazon has an appstore that everything will run just fine on the kindle fire, but what about other devices?

Any android device can use the amazon appstore, so I'm wondering if you can select that your app is just for kindle fire, or other tablets with 1024x600 resolution.

The nook appstore will be cut and dry though because the only devices that use it are the nook color and tablet, so you know exactly what devices will be using your apps.

I wonder if you can select nook tablet only on the nook appstore. If games are running slow on the kindle fire which has the same dual core 1ghz processor as the nook tablet, then I would imagine they would grind to a halt on the nook color with its single core 800 mhz processor.

Tiny Balls is gonna tear that up! I work at a university and nearly every public computer I have ran into has tiny balls for chrome on it. My wife is getting herself a new degree too and at her school two of her professors play it daily.

The kindle market will explode with it.

I can't wait to see how GS and all these great folks do on android!

I haven't installed any builds yet, so i don't know if you can just gmail them to yourself and install them that way or not. I tested some projects that are designed for ipad and they played ok, there were black bars on the side though.
  • butterbeanbutterbean Member Posts: 4,315
You can use gmail to open up .apk files on your Kindle Fire, I installed the viewer that way. So you can do it with games.

On the Nook however, you can't, everything must be installed and uninstalled via the terminal, which is a PIA. I'll be doing a video tutorial on this tonight.

@MjMdesign: I don't think the Kindle is the iPad killer, because there are so many die hard apple fans out there, but I think it's the best competitor yet... much smoother, and less clumsy than the Nook device (the old one that is)

After you get the Viewer set up TSB and butterbean, please advice us on how your projects preform on Android. Did you have to do a lot of tweaking within your project, or just some minor things here and there. I might break down and buy one, but not until I am sure it will be a promising market.

@FZfeed: Under settings, and device, I turned on "Allow installation of Applications" from unknown sources, is that what you were talking about?

can you direct me to where I can toggle that setting you mentioned?

    Thanks!
  • fzeedfzeed Member Posts: 247
Thats the setting i was talking about. Thats the only thing i have done since opening the box, is check that setting.
  • butterbeanbutterbean Member Posts: 4,315
so you were able to upload games to the viewer via wifi after checking that? I'll try it again, thanks so much
  • fzeedfzeed Member Posts: 247
Yes, without any problems (other then having to do upload twice per project cause the viewer crashes after the first upload)

mine has power button on bottom and the screen does flip.

    Yup!

@fzfeed: Now I'm having trouble connecting to my wifi whereas before I was just fine, and apparently it's only with the kindle... do you know a quick way I could fix this? Should I go into my router settings and do anything? I'm not very knowledgable about Wi-Fi stuff, and been trying to look this up online...

Yes, my kindle does flip the screen and I haven't pushed the power button on accident... YET! It's on the bottom of the Kindle...
  • fzeedfzeed Member Posts: 247
All routers are different, but you shouldn't have to change anything. If right out of the box it wouldn't connect then i would have a different answer but it sounds like yours worked fine, then stopped. My Kindle seems to drop wifi ALOT while none of my computers, iPods, iPads, iPhones, Samsung Galaxy have any problems with the wifi. I googled it and it sounds like alot of Kindles did not update to the latest software, here is a link to where i got that info: http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdPage=1&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx1IZ2SLUOH1C6P
I have not tried the fix yet as it isn't that bad for me yet.

Have not tested on the Fire but my apps have played perfectly through the viewer on android handhelds and tablets but Absolute crap once I loaded the .apk directly. Major differences in my experience between the two for me.

Oh man, i just bought a Galaxy and a Fire today then going to sign up for Pro. I hope the .apk performance issue is resolved soon!
  • butterbeanbutterbean Member Posts: 4,315
Finally was able to test on the viewer, my games are running pretty good, so now the real test begins with the .apk :)

@fzeed: I hope it's resolved quickly as well!

I have also notice Lower FPS on the android devices compared to iPhone performance. But I guess that is to be expected with each device having different specs

My home network is pretty much state-of-the-art with all the latest goodies. My wifi at work, is the worst possible. Its really weak, really slow. Now, at home my Kindle keeps dropping wifi (but none of my other devices do). I'm at work, and i haven't dropped my wifi at all (been here for about an hour) WTF! Anyway, i read somewhere that if your router is broadcasting in B (as well as G/N) that could be causing a problem. My router is broadcasting B because of my Nintendo Wii. So when i get home i'm going to turn B off. If that doesn't fix it, i read that putting your Kindle MAC address into the router could fix the problem as well. So if anyone tries those fixes and it works, let the rest of us know! I can't do anything until i'm off work, but i'll get back to you with my results.

got a fire yesterday from best buy.

For me the viewer works but it is a bit inconsistent. The first attempt failed. Or so I thought. All I got was a black screen so I exited the viewer, reopened it, and tapped on the "recent" list and the game that I thought had crashed (or never opened) was listed there. So I clicked on it and it worked perfectly (other than sounds being delayed). Then I tried to use the viewer again and it open right away and gave me the fps data, etc.

Now I am going to try and create an apk and load it through gmail.

    fingers crossed!

OK, thanks to tenrdrmer's awesome youtube vid (thanks, man!) I got my app loaded onto my Fire and it works pretty well. I am trying out my game "Jump 'N Slash" which is like a ninja version of doodle jump mashed with fruit ninja. For some reason the rules that check if the ninja is colliding with the platforms and above the platform and falling down are executed inconsistently. Sometimes the ninja falls right through the platforms. Then I close the app and reopen it and it works fine. Also the sounds are WAY late. I think I saw that the GS team is working on that. So for now I need to try to figure out what the collide problem is and then determine which sounds to get rid of. I am wondering if I need to put the ninja's rules in a brief timer due to the GS opening scene hiccup. Or try the DBA preloader tool.

So other than those issues things seem to be working pretty well. THe frame rate of the published apk seems to be inline with the viewer. I'll report back with more details after I try to iron out these bugs.
