Box It In! Coming soon. Looking for beta testers. Qix like game.

Hello all. We have done internal beta testing and looking to add a few more testers. This game will run on Android/IOS Phones, and IPAD tablets.

We are looking for feedback and bugs. If anyone is interested in helping us out please send me a message with your device type and email address.

I really appreciate any help you can provide in beta testing. The more the better!!

Here is a little video of the game I recorded on my ipod touch. The inspiration came from a game I played when I was young called Qix.

Thanks!!

I have to say I like this game....I give it a solid 4 of 5 stars. I can't say any changes are needed in game play. The ONLY thing I noticed were in the instructions you show collisions are bad with other boxes and the enemy when building your box but do not show a collision with the walls confining the gameplay. Because of this I initially did not consider this and it took me a few game plays to determine that was also bad. I see you have a bit extra un-used real estate at the bottom of the game where the buttons are and the iAds...just a bit...maybe increasing the total area some more....I can understand if the is an area for calculating purposes so not a major issue.

Maybe also would be leaderboards of at least my high score. Other than those 3 very small details, everything seemed to function as needed.

Another note...as always I give my apps to my almost 3 year old son and he was not able to break it...make it crash or create bugs...lol...so good work.

  • crestwoodgamescrestwoodgames Member Posts: 191

@Thunder_Child What do you mean by leaderboards? A page with the 10 highest scores or something? When you lose or hit pause, it will show you current score and the highest score.

Its funny you mention this about your son! I do the same thing with my boys. I think a 3 year old is probably the best though. They seem to be able to break a lot of things :-)

When I say leaderboards I'm referring to the leaderboards that allow everyone who plays your game after download...to see their rank and high score compared to each other worldwide. If you are new to this I could help you with it...it's very simple. I even have a tutorial about it...slightly outdated because iTunes connect has changed a bit but the GS function to do so has not.

Check out this video if you like.

    Leaderboards and high score...

I did set this up, but forgot to put the control actor for gamecenter on the scene. Rookie move.

    Thanks for the info.

    Update to come soon!

Nice game looks cool. Just one comment after watching the video the balls are kind of bright compared to your UI. Maybe adjust the opacity on them or change the color type to more match the overall digital haze feel.

  • crestwoodgamescrestwoodgames Member Posts: 191

@Lost_Oasis_Games I agree. In that video the colors look a bit saturated. I might need to tone them down a bit.

  • ArmellineArmelline Member, PRO Posts: 5,364

I initially thought the same as @Lost_Oasis_Games, but actually playing it, it's good that the balls are bright and clear. Helps to avoid them :D

  • crestwoodgamescrestwoodgames Member Posts: 191

That is true. Once a lot of balls are on screen it gets a bit crazy.

    Version 1.13 Feedback

    • It’s a great casual game. I love the concept and the similarity to Qix.
    • Gameplay and physics generally seem to work well.
    • Some of the smaller boxes (36, 44, etc.) don’t appear correctly on my iPhone 6. Their outlines fade and blink.
    • Having to tap with your finger is problematic because you end up blocking your view of the action. I don’t know if there’s another alternative that would be better, though. Probably not.
    • I think that when you clear all of the balls on a level, it should auto-complete the level. It seems awkward to have to make boxes on a level without enemies. But maybe that’s part of the challenge (can you still complete the level?).
    • The freeze star powerup is awesome.
    • The difficulty scaling as you increase levels seems appropriate and engaging. Level 8 is hard!
    • Leaderboards are working for me.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I will look into the box graphic issue.

As far as the boxes go, it is part of the challenge. Since larger boxes give more points, and boxes left over give you a bonus. It helps with the score and with the challenge.

The finger part covering the screen is tough on mobile and takes some getting used to. I don't know any way around this. In the next version, I have the max balls limited to 8 to see how it will do.
I might increase the number back to 10, but slow them down instead.

I really appreciate all the suggestions. Trying to keep it fun yet challenging is a fine balance. The game is a lot easier on tablet with all the room you have.

    Thanks again!

Am also trying to think of other power ups to implement.

In version 1.14, the leaderboards are showing my old score and level even though I just surpassed both.

Thanks for the heads up. I will look into why it is not updating.

  • tatiangtatiang Member, Sous Chef, PRO, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 11,949

Still really enjoying the game! I noticed that one of the IAPs is "Permanently increase the MAX HP x6" and it shows six dots instead of the usual three. You might consider changing the wording to "Permanently increase the MAX HP to 6" or "Permanently double the MAX HP" or "Permanently increase the MAX HP x2" since it's not actually multiplied by six.

That is a good point. I will get that changed. Thanks for the tip!

I am also adding another "bonus" type ball. If this one is trapped, 5 bombs will rain down from above, destroying any enemies it hits.

In my experience, sandbox leaderboards can be really slow to update. I'd not rule out it just being Apple being slow. I've seen scores take several hours to appear on the leaderboards before.

@Armelline I'd wondered about that. Although now I'm just seeing a single entry for the leaderboards. None of my scores appear. Shouldn't older scores remain even when an updated version of the app is installed?
