This has turned out to be a literal SOS. I don't believe in Ads in games, or IAP - I personally prefer the 'I make something fun, you pay for it if you fancy the look of it' model.

This is a kind of rallying cry to those that feel the same! :)

Sure you can - I even added a little something for those of your ilk ;)

Agreed. I have never paid for an IAP. I only play games that with an up front price, I find the experience to be more enjoyable and the games to be of higher quality. I have been encouraged that it seems there is a growing user base of customers who prefer this model and are more likely to play a .99-1.99 game rather than a free one with IAPs.

I broadly agree with you, but I have paid for IAP stuff!
It's never been for 'consumables' or to remove ads and it's always been from established companies. It's (as far as I remember) been for complete new games within a collection such as the Atari collection, or the Galaga one or something like that.

I ended up writing a bit of a rant here, so decided to delete it! It was basically about pre-order DLC/ DLC on the disc/ season passes/ IAP consumables/ adverts/ 'pay to win'/ 'pay to continue'/ 'pay to not wait'/ sales/ bundles/ digital copies costing the same as retail etc etc

For someone that's used to happily buying complete games for a set price, this just annoys and disappoints me. It's all a bit 'user hostile' really and yet still makes money for big publishers and stuff.

So yeah, I try and look at it from a player's perspective and what I would like as a player myself, old fashioned as I am. So people get a (hopefully) fun, complete game for a set price.

    :)

I like that outlook. I also wouldn't condemn all IAP, i think I would purchase them for things like extra levels, or episodes in a game I really enjoyed. Unfortunately often if people see your game "offers in-app purchases" this will often give them a negative feeling even if you use IAPs well, because the majority of games abuse IAPs in the ways you describe.

Anyway, didn't mean to change the topic of your thread. Looking forward to playing your game, keep seeing screenshots on twitter, looks great!

Not to mention how massively over-populated the F2P market is now. I reckon paid is the way to go, unless you have something that REALLY suits IAP.

No worries, I did bring it up, so the blame rests solely at my feet - and ty for the kind words and following on Twitter.

I do love Twitter. That you can interact with so many people so quickly is awesome. It's my default place to release info now (my Facebook page is second, and my actual official website a distant third).

I read an interesting article recently that said something along the lines of 'Doing f2p as an indie is now like playing at the high stakes poker table - you can't compete' which I found interesting (but I can't remember who said it or where it was! Sorry!).

But going back to the game, yes, it's $1.99 - but there's a lot of game there I think - lots of 'bang for your buck(s)'. I hope people like it!

I agree. Mario from PikPok tried to convince me for years to go free (it clearly works for them). I finally did with a couple of games, the best performer only got 5k downloads, the other a couple of hundred. Nowhere NEAR enough to make a profit. My best performing game by far was paid ($3.99). I refuse to sell anything under $3 now, unless it's really simple or I have a sale. Same with Android, game made by far the most when at $3.99.

In a nutshell, 99c games and F2P are not viable as an indie IMO.
