To be honest I started out with illustrator about ten years ago, so maybe it's just too ingrained in me to give anything else a chance, but anything else just feels like a poor imitation.
To be correct, he used inkscape for the tutorials because its free and everyone can follow along. What he actually uses is corel. But the tool is not relevant. Sprite can make masterpieces in ms paint. Its the artist not the tool. The tool just comes down to personal preference.
i dont bother with vector software (other than toonboom) usually but id hav to put my vote with illustrator. would rather use an adobe product than something from a nobody. but if i really had to use inkscape then i wouldnt have a problem with it either. just adapt to the software.
Never used inkscape, because I've always had Illustrator. Tried freehand back in the day, but hated it because Illustrator was what I knew. I guess it's what you know is what you use.

Isn't it just so convenient that I can get the exact same as yours even the same curves and thicknesses off google images in one search?
My brothers done this freehand then photoshop to colour it..
