Blasteroids is a 1979 arcade shoot'em up (Atari), better not to use that name. For a first game I think it's quite good. Good art is important, but rather than that I think the entertainment factor is more important (especially if you're scarce on resources).
Even a game with simple artwork but good gameplay can be successful. Endlessly dodging asteroids might get boring, how about waves of alien enemies and more extras to pick up?
Remember a game called Katakis (for C-64)? Graphics were quite nasty back then, but it was the gameplay and the drive it had that fascinated us (call it entertainment factor). You might wanna have a look into that. Katakis was a huge hit and was itself heavily inspired by another game called R-Type which became something of a legend.

Good luck!
Thanks a lot for that advice! Yes, I am working on putting more aliens and some other stuff. But about the gameplay, what do you think about it? Any other idea? Name? Thanks a lot!

It`s a good name, but it`s not original, as balsamicode said: "Blasteroids is a 1979 arcade shoot`em up." Wikipedia also agrees with him. I better get a better name.
This is my new video of my game: You can see I used some ideas from: P-O-M; quantumsheep; SnapFire; uptimistik; harlin36; design219; 007leokart; milelowe; JPickard; balsamicode. The game is not done yet, I still have a lot to work on! Anyway, thanks for the ideas!
Name comes last I'd say. Maybe it will crystallize or pop up in your head when you've been working on your game all day long. The universe seems rather static - why are the asteroids not moving against the fighter? (I say it again, check out Katakis, Level One) The aliens are static too, if they don't move around at least I'd let them aim at the fighter (gun follows player movement). Also for a shoot'em up, it feels more like dodge the rocks.
Katakis (C-64): R-Type (Arcade):
Both games are from 1987! They don't look like much nowadays, but back then that was mindblowing!! Good luck mate!
you need custom fonts and dont use tsb's graphics it dosent fit with the game at all. Make there be more upgrades like a shield/ force field and some upgrades like "Katakis"
not trying to be critical but trying for you to have a better game
Definitely seriously study Katakis and R•Type. I have an R•Type game on my super nintendo, and it's really fun, but games like this that aren't perfected end up being unimaginably dull. Be sure to add a bunch of upgrades and things, as well as some sound effects and cool music. Really rocking music makes games like this 1000 times more exciting.
