Just for clarification, are you allowed to use any FREE templates like from orbz or firemaple. Just for reference when you re-create something for your game.

Personally, I think it would be really hard to police this. There are a lot of templates out there (both free and paid) that I have learned from over the years.
I think the judging panel is good enough that if anyone borrows too much from a template (free or paid) they will be able to tell.
I don't mean to be too dorky about this but should there be the option of including a 1000 word max game description. This could be an optional thing that gives you a chance to say "I borrowed a bit of code from ORBZ's line drawing demo but here's how I made it my own..."
Wow, I haven't really checked the forums much but this thread has definitely gained a tonne of momentum. It's looking great so far. I'll definitely be entering. I don't have much that i could put towards the prizes but I'd feel a right stinge if I didn't contribute. Here's an old snake template I had/have for sale that I can put a copy of towards the prizes http://gamesalad.com/forums/topic.php?id=18199. It's not much but meh!
EDIT: and maybe it will be a good idea to sticky this, or the official announcement when it begins and change the sub forum so that the topics don't show up on the main page. That way the main page won't get clogged up with them.

Just some thoughts...
Sounds good. I hadn't planned on doing something that would need this yet but it was just to kinda clear some things up.
Pro membership really? This contest is getting REALLY interresting, both for the prize and the competition. I have a feeling there will be a lot of good games.
Can't wait to hear about the theme, hope it's a good one
the theme should be kept secret until the start of the contest so people don't start early. Stormy, maybe put together a mailing list for the judges so we can discuss?
templates should be OFF LIMITS. This is the think outside the box, not use a common template.

I'm still wanting to throw this in as a prize, if the competitors can throw in prizes.
And excited about that free pro membership prize. IT'S ON MAN, IT'S ON! >:O
In response to a collection of questions and ideas:
- The 'Theme' has already been decide. NOT YET ANNOUNCED. If any judges are desperate to discuss it please email me at jon@stormystudio.com... though please trust me its a cool one, that will allow for a mixed set of games whilst keeping them constrained to a loose theme. (Feel free to keep discussing ideas on the thread...you might guess it)...
- Please NO Templates (free or paid) you can learn from them, like we all do (but please don't just replicate large sections of rules). The idea is to create a new game from scratch and you will get more points for doing something new and exciting.
- Will definitely make a yellow sticky at some point with the rules in, and any updates.
- @RH - YodaPollo is setting it up so any comments/game development thread updates in the TOTB3 section won't appear on the 'new posts' section to help stop the forum getting swamped in TOTB3 posts.
- 11clock - Thankyou for the offer of the promo code for your game, but will probably say no, simply because there are always so many promo codes up for grabs on the forum. Hope that makes sense...many thanks for the offer, and glad your looking forward to the contest... ITS ON MAN!!! ITS ON!!!
- @SciTunes, - We can definitely encourage people to write a brief description for their games when they submit them.
- I will put up a collection of the new templates offered later today...(many thanks..)
- The goal is to make a game, not specifically for iphone, just a game made in GS it could be destined for an apple device, the web etc... The game does not have to be finished after the 3 week contest, but the more finished the better the chance of winning (more points could be earned).
- Will work out the points system early next week and make it publicly available. (I'll check it with some judges before announcing it).
- @iTouchGamer - Please only use artwork you have created specially for the game, as it will allow for some fair scoring on the games. But if you must use graphics from templates you own, you risk losing some points as the judges may recognise where it comes from.
- Cool i think thats everything answered for now...
Will all the judging be based solely on the screen shots and gameplay videos posted on the forums or will we also have to send the judges a copy of the game?
BackUpAndDown said: Will all the judging be based solely on the screen shots and gameplay videos posted on the forums or will we also have to send the judges a copy of the game?
I think like the other TOTB's submitting a video is all that is necessary but I thinking sending a copy can't do any harm as it is meant to be released on the appstore!
I have confirmation from yodapollo at Gamesalad hq.
If you win the pro membership Which is for a year. But are already pro, you can use the prize once your own pro membership expires.
As for what you need to submit for voting. A video showing the game in action will suffice, But if you want to goto the effort of making adhoc versions available or a web version that too will be great. (we can iron out these details before the end of the 3 week competition).
Great news on the Pro Membership prize.... I think the competition is really gaining momentum, and is going to generate a lot of entries. The competition feels like its got a lot more weight to it now, with an official GS endorsement... so kudos to GameSalad for backing the competition
Its going to be interesting seeing what people create...I think we'll see some really creative efforts!
...and great work Stormy for organising whats evolving into a great community event.
Just throwing this out there but maybe the NEXT contest or someday, we should have a game jam type thing. Where you meetup at a location and bring your computers and all work there for like 48 hours or something. Im not entirely sure how the game jam worked though. Just a thought! this competition got a lot bigger for sure!
And you create a full working game completely from scratch?
Are you talking about a future game jam.... ??? (real nice idea, aim for a future contest - a lot harder to set up, locations, electricity costs, insurance? ... I'm sure it would be do able, just need aome financial baking to setup...)
...
TOTB3
.....I'm planning on getting the rules, voting points system for judges worked out by Tuesday night.
Really looking forward to seeing what people come up with and reading each entrants game development thread in the 'Think Outside The Box forum section'.... It was so cool at the end of the last contest to be able to look back and see how each of the entrants games had formed...from cool sketch designs for characters to advanced game mechanic tests in GameSalad.
Ok, before I hit the hay, just putting together the text for the official rules.... what else is needed...?????
RULES - Games need to be based around the given theme - Games do not have to be finished, or on the app store to enter. But the more finished it is the better your chance of scoring more points and winning. - You must submit a video of gameplay to the official thread before the end of the competition by 12pm (noon) GMT. You Can also submit app links, playable web links and a text description. - You can not use templates (free or paid) to make your game - Your game will be judged on a points systems followed by each judge. (points system will be available before the contest begins... example of it: 'original gameplay idea - worth between 0 and 50 points) - You must have full copyright to all artwork and sound used in the game. - The game can be designed for use on either an Apple device (iphone, ipad, mac) or web. - If you miss the deadline your submission will not be accepted. - Voting will be carried out by a selection of respected GameSalad developers. - Each contestant is encouraged to run their own forum thread in the 'Think Outside The Box' forum section, showing the progress on your game from conception, early sketches, GS test projects to the final incredible entry.
I don't want it to be so long no one reads it, but I also want it to be fair and reduce the need for questions once the contest starts.
Can you think of any more?
I've also updated the available prizes in the first post of this thread... new template from RH, lots of templates from Tenrdrmer and I'm adding in any templates from my own website template section.. another new one coming soon :-)
I have ideas for themes: my favorite steam punk. ( if you don't know what that is look it up) pixel Underwater Future War Those are just a few but I really want to do steam punk.
Not sure how using free ressources is any better than teaming up. But I guess this should save me some time from making my own music
Good question.

It still takes time to find it. The teaming thing is bad because you can have someone devote the entire 3 weeks to one area like art work or Code only and then others take care of filling in the blanks. Those blanks take a lot of time and it would be an uneven playing field if some teamed and some couldn't get a team together.

Hmm... Maybe but there are benefits of working alone. You don't have to worry about all the time spent communicating and all the back tracking because the team doesn't agree with where the project is heading.
It's similar to finding a template. Yes, it's long to find but you might also know what graphics you want to burrow and make the game around it. I already know where I would find my music.
What if I take graphics of my older games? I own the copyright but I wouldn't have to find time in those 3 weeks to make them. As BackUpAndDown said, it's more trouble working with someone than searching google. Remember we wan't these games to be good and unique, not just some quick good looking game for the contest.
It's basically like using a temaplate but for gfx.
Does that mean no free sound effects or images etc.?
No, what this means is your not allowed to include things you don't have the allowed rights to use in a game. So don't just 'borrow' images from a google image search, or steal sound effects from somewhere. If you can find royalty free sounds that your legally allowed to use then fine...sometimes they ask you to give them a credit when you use a sound effect. So I guess you would add that in your game. But if you make your own sound effects and all your own visuals then that's got to be a better thing. Maybe I need to reword the copy right rule... essentially dont illegally use images and sounds.

Also @dreamlab... no bird theme... please no bird theme
