Where creating my own artwork, do I need to use Adobe Illustrator?

    You can use any program you like, I use a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop typically. But they are not required, you could use Inkscape, GIMP, or whatever you prefer. The image file format Gamesalad works best with though is PNG so it's a good idea to make sure whatever image processor you choose supports that file format.

    GameSalad is happy to import pixel based images, .psd and .png files are good options.
