Increasing Spawn Rate Over Time

I have a spawner which spawns actors at the top of the screen. They then fall to the bottom of the screen at a fixed speed until they hit a certain point, then they are destroyed. Every formula I've tried to try and get the spawn rate to increase over time has resulted in nothing spawning at all.
I basically want to have spawn rate directly related to time played so it increases at a constant rate (as opposed to increasing say, every 5 seconds). As time increases, I want the actors spawned more frequently. How can I do this?
Appreciate any help.
