what rule would I have to put (I know animation is involved) to make character have a falling animation and not just a still picture accelerating toward the ground

Can you describe what you mean by a falling animation, do you have any examples / references ?
Like, when the character is falling, he's not just standing still. Like if you play smash bros and the character falls, they have their hands up until they land
Make a rule that says 'if self.linearVelocity Y' < '0' :do: 'Animate'
