Where the **** did my project go!

So, I wanted to make a copy of my project and change somethings for demo purposes. So I went into where I have my projects saved, I copied and pasted the project folder, opened that other one started changing things, when I realized I was on an older version of my project! Why? So I went back into the folder, and opened up the project I've been working on, and it was the older one now! WTF! Now I have weeks to months of lost progress! Has this happened to anyone? How can I recover it!

    I have the project in a much more current state on a thumb drive, and when I copy it from that thumb drive and paste it onto my computer, then open it, it's still in that older version. It's like the program refuses to move on from that save from so long ago. It's so bizarre.
