I assume you're talking about the white background? I use Photoshop, but there might be something else out there to easily remove that. Or you can try to avoid pictures like that in the first place by adding "png" to your google search, for example: "cat png" - You'll know if the background is transparent because it will be checkered gray&white instead of just white.

And for your second question, do you mean importing pictures into GameSalad? You just go to the "Media" tab, select "Add images and audio", and browse to your picture.
