Having suffered frequent kernel panics and now just black screens when clicking the green preview button in GS I would like to get some idea of what is causing it so please post brief system details if this has happened to you. Thanks

OS X 10.6.4

    iMac i7

Only had one Kernel Panic but another non-message freeze and multiple GS crashes.
  • Rob2Rob2 Member Posts: 2,402
multiple GS crashes where you have to force quit?

was the kp and freeze when you went to preview?

ps thanks...freeze is a better word to use
  • reddotincreddotinc Member Posts: 653
where GS closed it self and provided an error report that I submitted.

Both freezes were when pressing the screenshot button within preview.

    no worries :)

I do get a black screen once and a while when clicking preview. Clicking the little reload arrow fixes it.

No hardware crashes though. Once and a while GS will crash after I already hit the quit button anyway. That happens on most of the software I use though. Flash and Photoshop especially.

"flash has unexpectedly quit..." ( well, not TOO unexpectedly, since I just hit the quit button!)

No real crashes here. But I have to quit due to slow down (memory leak?) after about every 15 minutes of work. When I reload after that, GS reports that it had crashed, so I guess it's not quitting cleanly.

    That's on MBP i7.

thanks....thats pretty unique, everyone seems to report the slowdown problem.

The only time I've ever had hard crashes is when I was trying to play a GS game in Safari. The GS plug-in either gives me a kernel panic, or it just freezes the system entirely, or I get a pretty cool-looking graphics corruption and it freezes.

I avoid playing with GS web games entirely.

    I have a late-2008 model iMac 20", Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 250GB hard drive, 4GB DDR2 667.

I'm getting hard crashes on a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz (late 2006) model. If I click the green preview button, both my displays instantly go blank and my audio begins to skip. The only solution is to restart my Mac Pro each time, which obviously gets annoying real fast. I paid the $99 membership fee, so I'm really hoping this gets resolved soon.

    I just got a new imac 27", i5 2.8ghz, 4gb 1333MHz ddr3 , ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB, OSX 10.6.4

I get a black screen (kernel panic?) very frequently when I start a preview with the green play button (GS 0.8.9). This has yet to happen in any other scenario, but has happened three out the five times I've tried preview on this machine. I'm afraid to use it now. =(

    @Rob2

Pretty much the same hardware and yes get the doom stuff when hitting preview button, but if I save the game, prior to hitting the preview, some of the times its cool. I think if you have a blank screen for the scene, then GS tries to put the screen in on touch of the preview button and it just gets totally smushed. Smushed is a tech term for fubar.

So I've been reading that the screen blacking out isn't all that uncommon for macs (seems that the fans aren't keeping the GPU cool enough at the standard speed). So I turned some music on while reproducing the problem and...... the music stopped and stuttered too and when I restarted there was a kernel panic report (usually there isn't). Anyway, here it is, hopefully its useful to someone for fixing this (I submitted it as a bug to GS also)

    Cheers.

    Hi Guys,

Im getting the black screen very frequently. I had been thinking it was hardware related as I haven't had this problem prior to the current version of GS. But I've been away for a bit and haven't used GS for a few versions.

    I'm running MacBook Pro
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1

The kernel panics seemed to be an ATi graphics problem and I haven't had one since performing an update http://gamesalad.com/forums/topic.php?id=9625#post-69626 . I feel a bit guilty now having not been more vocal about it .... but you haven't seen my hat! :)
  • LandcrabLandcrab Member Posts: 9
I did the snow leopard graphics update before trying GS on this machine. Maybe it would work if I hadn't? I have read a few cases where that update caused some problems, generally on older hardware though...
  • TwistedMechTwistedMech Member Posts: 408
27 inch i5 iMac - black screen or complete system crash. 20% of the time i run my own project and 80% with any GS templates or samples.

So far no issues on my new macbook pro 17 i7 which uses nvidia so guess its an ATI driver issue.

at least i can say that i have more crashes on a mac than any windows user lol.

I didn't have Kernel Panic yet, but sometimes I have black screen instead of game, while Previewing it. Reset button helps.
And few times GS just crashed when it was open for a long time.

Hi guys. I just wanted to let you know that at least some of these issues have definitely been fixed. (It's kind of hard to tell just for sure about all of them from the descriptions). Also -- any time GS crashes and you send in a crash report, real people do in fact look at them and try to determine the problem and the solution. It's a little bit like detective work, and not every crash report contains useful information, but definitely some of them do. So please do send a crash report if you get a crash, and definitely report bugs if you see them. (See "Report a bug" link below) Thanks for all of the information here.
  • LandcrabLandcrab Member Posts: 9
That's encouraging. I'm looking forward to the new release =)

I get kernel panics every time I press the green triangle. Makes the software pretty useless when it constantly crashes or freezes my whole machine.

MBP 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
ATY Radeon X1600 with 256 MB VRAM
    OS X 10.6.5

I have tried to capture a crash report, but was able to do it only once (which I did send in). The kernel panics are so sudden that no crash report is generated in Apple's Feedback Tools (except that one time).
  • TerrellTerrell Member Posts: 7
I have discovered to save, save, save. And when I do that, it seems to keep going without a crash. Save especially before hitting the green Preview button.
  • dmcdowelldmcdowell Member Posts: 128
Hopefully this update will resolve your (collective) issues. If not, please contact us. We just got a test machine with similar specs and after the update I plan to do some extensive tests with it.
  • LandcrabLandcrab Member Posts: 9
The update has eliminated my black screen crashing problem (so far at least, fingers crossed). I've run about 30 different tutorials/demos and had no problems with preview.

    That is great to hear!

I get the odd crashes, but that's probablye because I am running GS in a VMWare image of Snow Leopard on an A11 Toshiba Tecra with 8MB vram (well dynamic vram I was told, it borrows more ram if necessary though I've never heard of such a thing) at the moment. I do own an intel Mac though, so if absolutely necessary, I can upgrade it and use that... and force my gf to use another computer lol.

I have to Force Quit Game Salad quite a lot.

But the worst thing is that it doesn't play any Sound FX. It plays music, but not Sound FX. The sample projects that have sound don't play, and my own projects don't play either. Can't figure it out!

    Hymloe,

Please check the date of threads you bump. You have a tendency to bump threads that are 1+ years old. GameSalad has changed so much in that time period there is very little information that still applies.
