iPad Publishing costs and what do I need

SB.DevSB.Dev Member Posts: 7
Hi all,

I would like to know what I will need to to pay to submit my app to the app store all up and also whether I need to have xcode on my computer.
If I do need xcode do I need to have the latest version that supports iPad apps as well as iPhone?
Right now I have 3.1.2 and I don't think it supports iPad applications.

Thanks.

Are you planning to make your app with GS or Xcode? If with GS, then no you do not need xcode. The whole point of GS is to be able to make apps in a much easier way without coding. If you will be using the tools apple gives you (xcode) then yes you will need xcode opened.... If you are planning to use GS then you will need to pay $99 for the express and another $99 for your developers license which goes to apple...overall $200

    Thanks Guys,

Also, are they one off costs or do you pay them every time you submit an app?

One time for the whole year, after 12 months you'll have to renew it and pay it again. So make use of it and make a ton of apps!

You will need to have the latest version of XCode to make the GS Viewer app, which is pretty crucial for testing on a device. It shows you RAM usage and FPS while you play.

The latest XCode requires OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The 99$ to both Apple and GS are yearly payments.

You can make as many apps as you want to in that time frame.

So I do need xcode. Do I need the latest one?

Do I ABSOLUTELY need it or could I bypass that.

You need it only if you want to test your app on your device. You can develop and publish with GS without opening Xcode once until the last part of developing really, which is when you are putting your provisioning profiles in the organizer through Xcode. So you defenitely need to download Xcode but you don't necessarily need to use it if you are making all of your apps with GS. I made a whole app without using the GS viewer on my device once, just used the GS preview and it came out exactly how I wanted. If your app is very simple and you don't need any testing, you don't need to download the GS viewer on your device through Xcode. It is, however very helpful as FMG said.

You need XCode for more than testing on an iDevice. You have to use XCode to launch the Organizer to register your development and distribution provisional certificates.

You should always remember that XCode is the base tool for iDevice Apps and as such is an integral need for the developer. It comes free with your membership with Apple, which as others have told you is a $99 annually renewable expense.

You cannot even use GameSalad for publishing (compiling) unless you are a registered Apple Developer with XCode installed.

So the answer to the Poll is YES. Without Xcode you cannot distribute an app to the AppStore, or get it onto an iDevice.

I don't use it. I just build an ad-hoc version for testing on my device... I'm too lazy to install the viewer, though I should so I can check RAM usage etc.. but hey... if it's working on a real device... maybe I won't. lol.
