Gamesalad Game Ideas

I want to make a game but I have no ideas, whatsoever. I would like for the ideas to be for side-scrolling games. I have mastered the basics and I know how to do rest.

Read a book, watch a movie, go out in nature, have sex, play with some friend, have an adventure, get drunk, play awesome games, think free - do that and inspiration will come ;)

If you're doing games for money:
Look at other successful titles, learn and try to mimic them but put a slight twist on your title so its not a clone.
(decent examples: Running With Friends, Temple Run, Subway Surfer, etc.)

If you're doing games for fun:
Do whatever the hell you want and be a trendsetter by doing whatever odd, abstract and wacky idea you want in your side-scrolling masterpiece.
(decent examples: Monument Valley, Limbo, Threes, Puzzlejuice)

I think you should think to yourself, what kind of game would I like to play? Is there some RPG or Pokemon like 2D game you played as a kid that you really enjoyed but thought it was too easy or too hard or had things you found to be annoying and wished you could do differently?

Heck, you could make a 50 Shades of Gray type game where you either play Anastasia or Christian with lots of spanking and hanky panky (though I wonder if a game with nudity would even be approved if you try to publish it) or make a game where you are Kim Jong Un, a superhero with mystical magical powers that rides Unicorns and spits magical skittles from your strange haircut and Miley Cyrus is your trusty sidekick and are you off to defeat the evil Kardashian empire haha.

    I love it!

A horror game where you hunt hippies to find love.
An adventure game where you must find spider people to gain levels.
A god game where you grow stuff on squids and the sky isn't even the limit.
An adventure game where you hang out with sky whales to become the king.

An action game where you stab villains but you don't play a big role in the story so you can actually do pretty much whatever you want. -- assassins creed?

to develop your idea engine, write 10 ideas a day, every day, for 10 days. they can be very short. every day

Keep an idea journal as well. Once they start to flow, sometimes they don't stop, and you'll want to remember them. I use a cheap spiral notebook.

My suggestion is make a game that you would like to play and a genre that you have a lot of experience with. Don't try to make another flappy bird game to make a quick buck unless you really love flappy bird :)

Once you make a game you really enjoy making and really enjoy playing then you'll have way there. The other half is learn how to market it :)

My game idea at the moment is based on a book I'm writing, so there is a slow process matching the two.
Like @phamtastic says do something you really, really like then whatever the outcome at least you have enjoyed doing it.
    But not with elephants!!!!!! ;)
