How do I make an icon?

This might sound like a very noobish question, but how do I make an icon. I've used iphone app generators before but didn't really like the quality it came out as, I really suck with my artwork and I know that making a icon is probly a very simple thing but I just don't get how to make one. This is for my new educational app and I really want to have an icon that stands out :)

    Well you need a graphics editing program. There are freebies that you can use in lieu of Photoshop which is best but expensive.. Gimp is free... Acorn isn't free but its cheap and pretty good. Once you have the software, you'll need a visually catching design and a resolution of 512x512(for the large version) and 57x57 for the small one. I think you may know some of this already since you have a game out already. But maybe some of it might be useful.

    First make a 512x512 icon with a program such as gimp (its free). Don't worry about making the corners curved or adding a glare, those are automatically done by Apple. Then once you have finished making the icon, save it and then open it in Preview. Resize it to 57 x 57 and the save it as a new file. Drag the 57 by 57 into resources in xcode and then name the file in the .plist. When you submit your app, you will need to upload the 512 by 512. Hope you found this useful
