Publishing companies worth it?

Just curious if anyone has worked with publishing companies like Chillingo etc. to promote/release their game and found success they otherwise would've never had. I'm sure the top publishers expect to receive a massive chunk of your profits, though, so I'm curious to hear feedback from those who've experienced working with such companies.

Also, during the consideration process, do they care whether a game has been released yet or not and would most publishers accept GS apps?

I believe that Chillingo does not allow GameSalad games because they can not add their program into it. I think there is a thread somewhere on here just do a quick search. I hope this helps a little!

a few people here have worked with publishers, and I think the general consensus was they would not do it again.

If anyways was going to go into business with a publisher, I would be sure to get a detailed explanation of what they will be doing for you. Their whole goal is to get people to download your game. So if they post a video to youtube, tweet it out, send out Press Releases I'd want to know how many youtube subscribers they have, Facebook friends, twitter followers, how many press releases they send out. Their success rate, how often they have an app reach the top 10 or 100, etc.

I do slightly more than @quantumsheep does. I create a youtube video, send out a few tweets, post in the touch arcade forums, email some review websites and occasionally send out a press release, but with his recent success of building a great game that people want to play, I might dial it back, since all that work recently seems to have no impact at all.

I Think it is worth it, depending on the publisher. I can't really go into much detail money wise but yes they do take a good amount, rightly so since they market your app.

    This.

I don't think they are the only ones, id be surprise if anyone has actually partnered up since 3rd party sdks are not possible in GS.

Don't forget about using the wrong screenshots, that's an essential part of any good promotional campaign these days.

At the end of the day a great app is a great app. Just keep making games and learning. Eventually that great game will come. Perseverance is the key to success! :)
