Bad image quality when publishing

When I did a build of my iPad game to test it I noticed that the images looked strange.

The top half is how it should be, while the bottom half is what I see.

This behavior can be seen on GSViewer also.

The image is saved as png24 with Photoshop, I tried several other png saving options in PS and I always get the same result.

Any ideas?

there is a fudge/solution here http://gamesalad.com/forums/topic.php?id=6264 I would have thought GS would have sorted this by now.

Banding has been a problem with subtle gradients all along. It seems to be more noticeable with certain color combinations. What I do is work a little noise into the gradients. Sometimes you have to try a few different things and test them each to see when you get an acceptable image.

    Thanks!

The noise system worked perfectly. The only problem is that file sizes grew a lot but until Gendai fixes it it can't be helped.

Hi maralfer, try saving the Color Mode as 16 bit; that should solve your prob.

There's some info here, if you'd like to read it:

that article is talking per channel so that would be 48bit color, the problem is definitely with GS.

Sure thing, Rob2; as opposed to 24 bit colour for 8 bit Color mode. I'm surprised that GS doesn't handle 16 bits per channel colour; perhaps put it in as a suggestion?

    what would be the point?

I guess no point if you're never going to use gradients in your games. Might help out someone else though, if Gendai fix it ;-)

yep we really need 280 trillion colors in GS!!!

My reasoning there is that if it solves the gradient banding problem, then, yes, we do! (But as 16 bit can't be handled, as you point out, I wish there was an even better compromise than dithering though).

sorry it was getting to have been a long day and your gyro was spinning my sweed :)

There followed a long rant about Gendai...but I will save that for another day!! .....the compromises are just getting boring...

And sorry it did that! No probs. All's well that ends...in a compromise, or something!

Hi, hope I don't spin any more sweeds! Just thought I'd post for those who don't know, for the record, that I've just found out that pre-iPhone4, iPhones don't support 24 bit, but supposedly iPhone4 does.
