Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan Dentist Games Coming out Next week

Been working on these two apps for a month and a half now and I finally uploaded them today. They are of course the popular dentist games that are all over the place right now. I just chose two themes I hadn't seen as of yet.

I don't think you can use ''Peter Pan'' Like when I applied a game include name 'World Cup' apple rejected it because of fifa has rights of World Cup.Like Candy Crush exp.

Check out my games on the App Store!

Both Peter Pan and Wizard of Oz are both in the public domain. I already checked that. If I made them look like any of the movies then I would be in trouble. But I made sure my artist made his own versions.

Also you can do a quick search and see that various developers have wizard of oz and peter pan apps out. You will also see that their renditions of the characters are their own. I already have these up on Google Play and Nook.

You have to realize that Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Little Mermaid, etc are not owned by MGM, Disney or any other corporation. They only own their renditions. The source material is in the public domain and you can use these well known characters as you wish as long ad you are not copying any of the movie version renditions.

Hi @dreichelt I really like your graphics; best of luck with your games.

P.S I didn't know dentist-type game were particularly popular - well, I learn something new every day! Is the gameplay along the lines of Dinner Dash or similar?

P.P.S "What time is your dentist appointment?" .. "Tooth hurty"

(Sorry, had to get that out of my head...)

    Haha nice joke ;)
I have one that's far worse though:
Q: What did the dentist say to the computer?
    A: This won't hurt a byte

Thanks! Yeah my graphic artist actually works for an app company where he goes to an office and works. He has made dozens of games before me and is just plain awesome. Actually my game is pretty close to "Little Dentist" which last I checked was #50 on family. Pretty simple game play. That company has a portfolio of dentist/doctor/salon games which are worth about 7 million in total. If you search educational, family, and other areas you will see lots of these. Also popular on other stores. I have these two on Nook and Google Play so far. Amazon I am doing today just have to finish setting up IAP for that.

    But Disney owns the TRADEMARKs!

In fact Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Cinderella is sooo widely trademarked in so many product categories I will be very surprised if you don't get jumped on by some toy or cosmetics company.

As you say, only the original source material. You would be safer making an eBook out of the original work than using these trademarks in the title of your game.

By the way, it is still under copyright in Spain.

@Hopscotch sure I suppose it's possible for some company to contact me. However, as I stated there are tons of apps up on apple's app store from dozens of companies that use these same characters. They also have the titles in their games. On Apple there are over 100 apps with Peter Pan in the title or close to it and over 100 with Wizard of Oz. I also consulted a lawyer who said I should be fine as long as my renditions are not copying the visuals of the well known ones which they aren't. Only time will tell!

I thought that Great Ormond Street Hospital had perpetual rights to Peter Pan, but it seems that's only true of the play, not the character itself. IANAL though.

    You should be okay.

Good to know however if they were exercising that in regards to apps I don't think there would be so many apps up all over with Peter Pan in the title. In any case, I'll see if Apple has any issues with it next week when they review it. Worse comes to worse I can easily alter the title. But I'm really not worried about this. There are so many companies who use Peter Pan for various products. I'm sure Disney doesn't waste their time taking all these people to court unless the work is a direct copy of their rendition. And I say again, I am certainly not the first developer to upload an app with peter pan as part of the title. Do a quick search and you will see that Apple has had no problem approving dozens upon dozens of peter pan apps.

Peter and Tink present the Neverland Dentist. Sounds quite good I think!

I'd love to see Disney try to take GOSH to court over the use of Peter Pan. If I recall not too long ago King was trying to take the rights of the original creator's rights away. I think he developed Candy Swipe two years before.

Sounds good to me too! Seriously it does, I'd go with that; at least you're guaranteed of no copyright names as the other guys pointed out.

Definitely looks like a wise move. Disney don't have exclusive ownership of the name Peter Pan in video games, but that doesn't mean they won't try to stop you. This seems a good summary (note the trademark section at the bottom):

The patent linked doesn't apply to video games, and this page specifically addresses the fuzziness of the issue.

Well Apple ended up not liking the titles so I had to change them. Now they will be "The Dentist of Oz" and "The Neverland Dentist." As long as they don't reject those too that is!

That's a shame @dreichelt‌ I thought you struck gold with public domain ideas.

Yeah I know! Well I think the good thing is most everyone will still recognize the title and characters. I have another dentist game "Robin Hood Dentist" and thankfully they didn't have issues with the title so I think that one can do really well. It got rejected though for some bug issues that I'm looking into. Actually the only different is that I used GS RC for that version. I also have a doctor game coming up. Can't wait to show that to you guys!

    "Robin Hood Dentist"

I live 20 miles from Sherwood Forest & often thought about using Robin Hood in a game. To be honest I have a great name and game idea for it. But as it's one of about 10 in my head at the moment! I was unsure how well known Robin Hood is worldwide. I thought it was just a British thing....

You'll want to check the latest news, but I'm pretty sure sherlock Holmes is now in the public domain. As long as you don't use the side on siloutte with the hat and pipe.

Someone recently one a court case.

Like I say, check it if you want to use it, as its probably still slight dodgy ground.
