Creating images for game salad

Hey guys! I was wondering how I would go about creating my own images from scratch for use with my games in game salad? Right now I've been pulling them off google or something. But I need to make my own I'mages so I can make it look like the person is moving/walking/running. So how would I start making my own images like this? Thanks

I hire an artist. If you don't want to do this there are many tutorials on youtube for inkscape or gimp (both programs free).
