touch movement help

my goal is to be able to:
1. To move, tap the screen and drag your finger left or right.
2. To jump up, drag your finger upwards.
like the actor will not jump to where i touch but will walk in the direction that my touch dragged towards. i want it to be able to do it from anywhere on the screen.
sorry if this a repeat discussion, but i looked and couldn't find what i was looking for.
p.s. if you have played limbo by playdead, that is the type of control i am going for.
