Upgrading in game vs creating a paid version

I have noticed quite a few games with free and paid versions. Is this preferable to using an In App Purchase to just unlock the full game, thus only having to deal with one codebase? Does Apple take issue with using IAP in this manner? I was planning on launching a game with 72 levels and offering the first 18 for and then let the user unlock the rest for a few bucks. Thanks in advance!

I prefer to see it free to try, then purchase additional levels. I don't think apple will have a problem with this since it is eliminating the duplicate "lite" games.

I personally have just done this. Released a game with 10 levels with in-game IAP unlock for the rest of 60 levels.

Apple does not have an issue with this at all. You are more likely to get to paid especially if you make sure the player has already unlocked a feature or game center achievement on the free levels, entice them to continue playing!

My app experience resulted in approx. 30:1 ratio, free (with iAP) compared to my paid versions.
