Large Actors and lag?

Will putting a large image in a game scene cause lag? Im trying to apply a sort of lighting effect in the manner of a transparancy over the level. Since it needs to move with an object i made it much larger than the camera/scene. But this causes the specific scene to have a remarkably large drop in frame rate. This is only tested so far in the in-engine preview, so I do not know if this would translate in iOS/Android performance, either. Is there a known issue involving oversized actors?

On further experimentation, it may be that I am manually reducing the Alpha of the layer in the system rather than having the image file already have the alpha turned down. Is that something else that can cause trouble?
