Forum Post Formatting issues

Anyone else struggling with the new post formatting system ? I'm having a hard time doing some basic tasks, for instance if I want to put something on a new line simply hitting return no longer works . . . . I need to put an extra line in between to make it work, so for example if I wanted to type 'constrain X to blah blah blah' > new line > 'constrain Y to blah blah blah' it all appears on one line like this:

constrain X to blah blah blah
constrain Y to blah blah blah

You need to put a line in between to separate them, like this:

constrain X to blah blah blah

constrain Y to blah blah blah

. . . . .

Also (this is a guess on my part) GameSalad mathematical terms seem to get recognised as tags - and are removed if you don't close them, so something like this . . .

Constrain Y position to 500[multiply symbol]sin(game.time)+512

. . . comes out like this . . .

Constrain Y position to 500sin(game.time)+512

. . . . .

And if you have two multiply symbols, like this . . .

Constrain Y position to 500[multiply symbol]sin(game.time[multiply symbol]150)+512

. . . the new formatting effectively removes both whilst italicising the characters in between, like this . . .

Constrain Y position to 500sin(game.time150)+512

. . . . .

I have to admit to not knowing my way around the new system yet, but is it me or does this kind of formatting seems poorly suited to the GameSalad forum ?

@Socks‌ I had to read your post through twice to understand it...

First time I thought there was some new formatting thing we could so with rules inside of Gamesalad Creator... only when I reached the last line of your post did it all make sense... like some kind of surprising Hollywood movie Twist...

But yeah I'm having the same issue with the double lines needed on the forum.

Normal writing seems to come ou t fine but as soon as I start using bullet points along with the return key to make a nice bullet pointed list, it puts it all one one line, rather than separate new lines.

    WITH ONE RETURN BETWEEN WORDS:
LOOKS FINE IN COMMENTS BOX, BUT IS PUT ON ONE LINE WHEN POSTED.)

    • Cheese
    • Ham
    • Mustard
    • Bread

    WITH TWO RETURNS BETWEEN WORDS
SHOWS TWO LINES DOWN IN COMMENTS BOX AND WHEN POSTED...)

    • Cheese

    • Ham

    • Mustard

    • Bread

But it looks like we can post code nicely now... useful for the recent PHP stuff and future cody things.

This seems to give you a new line . . .

'Less than' / 'br' / 'greater than' (quote this post to see what I mean).

    • Cheese

    • Ham

    • Mustard

    • Bread

Are you planning a cheese and ham sandwich with mustard by any chance ?

Since the forums now use Markdown, you probably want to put any "code" in a code block:

    Constrain Y position to 500*sin(game.time)+512

Add four spaces or a tab to the start of a line to make it a code block line. (I can't get tab to work though - moves focus from the text box to the Post Comment button.)

Full syntax here at Daring Fireball.

All Markdown is is a way of getting HTML results without having to use the HTML.

I can't get it to show the markdown syntax even in a code block, though :D

HATE this auto-suggesting smilies nonsense though.

    Cool ! Cheers for that.

I have always used the < code > block in the old system.

Now, although it still works, seems to get confused when editing your post.

The closing < /code > seems to go missing sometimes and then you can forget about getting the formating under control again. Formating blocks don't close or duplicate.

I had to edit a post 10 times last night, then finally retyped it because lists and code blocks got completely mixed up.

It's a frustrating learning curve, for sure. Just want to add that one of the main reasons for the switch to this new editor was to alleviate the long-standing problem of attachments being deleted when someone marked a thread as "answered."

Markdown is a great change in general. Full support the shift, especially as a long time user of reddit!

This popup smilies list is annoying as hell though :D

Yep, when I was at the gamesalad offices last week I asked about the new changes. The reason they asked this new system was because of the attachment issues. I believe they said they're going to try to go back to the old system once the bug had been fixed.

Here's a link I'm planning to add to the new FAQs when they get posted: https://github.com/adam-p/markdown-here/wiki/Markdown-Cheatsheet.

@Socks Since you're not Pro, can you tell me if the attachment icon is part of your toolbar and if so whether or not it allows you to embed images and attach .zip files?

    @‌tatiang

Attachment icon all present and correct !

    Does it allow me to embed images . . . ? Let me see . . . .

It only allows the 'Image URL' option, no 'Drop image/file' window, no option for attaching zip files.

@Socks Yummy cake. My other question was about .zip files... are you able to attach a project file, for example?

Like I say in my post 'no option for attaching zip files', but that's no big deal as we can always upload them elsewhere and then post a link !

@Socks I used to edit a CMS using these asterisk calls to format text before there was full wysiwyg support for text. I don't see the need for them here as we have the menu above. It should just format the text for us faux-live - but that may be a performance and display limitation.

Nice to read this thread and see the changes and learn a bit more :)

    Cheers, M@

@Socks I know a psychological experiment when I see one... putting important information right below a photo of chocolate cake. :'( (It's not crying, it's drooling)

@tatiang Don't trust the message. The cake is a lie!

It was allowing .zip files but today I can't add any. What's a person to do except... eat some cake. Mmm.
