I use Photoshop elements... cheap :) But I've also had great results with Gimp - VERY powerful tool and it's FREEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I just prefer Photoshop as it doesn't use that horrible X11.

Of course, if you can afford it, get the grandaddy version of Photoshop.

Oh, and Pixen is BRILLIANT for doing your character sprites and animations. It's also FREEEEEEE!!! I'll be using that for all of the characters in my game ;)

I use Photoline. Cheap(60euro), fast and powerful.
I've been trained in Photoshop, but could not afford it so I bought PL. Can't say there is any feature/function I'm missing:)

Might not have the most sexy interface (like pixelmator).

I'm using Pixelmator, GIMP, DrawIt, and ArtText. I was also using LiveBrush at the beginning.

I'm using a mix between Photoshop Elements 6, Aviary (online) and Sumo Paint (online), but I didn't too much until now when it comes to graphics.

I downloaded Pixen long ago but couldn't find any tutorials about sprites or animations. Why is it so brilliant in your opinion?! Can you show me any resources? Would love to get some help here.

I also use pixen for small graphics, I found it that easy to use I could work out how to use it without tutorials. Animation is great.

    Pixelmator is also an option.

Tutorials for Pixen? it's about the easiest app to use in the world! I even made an Atari2600 inspired short film animation with it for the NZ 48Hours film competition this year. Completed it with sounds and everything in around 6 hours (3 of which were trying to work out how to get Quicktime to scale using nearest neighbour... which it can't)... I'd post it here but it contains R18 pixelated lesbian sex... hahaha, got the crowd laughing, though!

Oh and yeah, Pixelmator is good too but I really missed the layer effects like what you can do in Photoshop... your bevels, drop shadows, all that stuff... found Pixelmator a little too limited. Beautiful to look at, though ;) Gimp is by far the most powerful free app.
