When did the forums open?

ArmellineArmelline Member, PRO Posts: 5,365
I have apparently been a member of these forums since March 2009.

I remember joining them about 3 years ago, when I first started working on a game before real life can storming in and stealing all my time. I ended up just lurking, but then rejoined about a year ago when I started to get a little free time again.

I have no recollection of joining near the start of 2009 :D It's entirely possible I did, as I do vaguely recall reading about GameSalad when it first came out and going "ooh I'll try that" then forgetting. Have the forums even been open that long?

Who's the oldest currently active member?

Good question. Oldest community member? CodeMonkey, maybe? Not entirely sure. I've been here almost 3 years and I know a handful have been here longer than I have.

I've been here since Nov 2009 but my date shows April 2010, so who knows?

I joined October 1, 2009 but never really did much of anything until about a year and a half ago.

A bunch of us have CodeMonkey beat, but there must be staff members who have been here longer. I'll definitely laugh if it turns out I'm the oldest active member :D Like @jamie_c I didn't really do much of anything until about a year and a half ago :D

There was a fourm before they switched to this vanilla platform. So early dates are sort of messed-up.

The earliest members were posting long before their "join dates". For example @CodeMonkey's join date is Oct 09. But he was already posting in February 09. (So you can't trust "join dates" very much.)

But CodeMonkey is a GameSalad Employee -- so that one might not count.

The earliest 'currently active' forum members are probably:
    @Butterbean: First Posting = ~April 09 (but join date says Sep. 09) Last Active = Dec 13
@JGary321: First Posting = ~May 09 (but join date says Oct. 09) Last Active = Today
@QuantumSheep First Posting = ~May 09 (but join date says Oct 09) Last Active = Today

Well my first posting was definitely a long time AFTER my join date :D I can only assume I joined the original forums then completely forgot about it for a few years :P

I first came here in the late 1970s, the actual forum design was all wooden panels and bold patterns, not easy on the eye to be honest, but the real problem back then was the lack of a decent mobile platform, it was all 'Simon™' and 'Merlin™' with the occasional forum member attempting to upload something to a food blender or Breville Sandwich Maker™.

I can still smell the cheese, the burning cheese, it's a smell that never leaves you, sometimes I weep when I think of what happened in those sandwich toasters, but mostly I just try and forget it all, just move on with my life, pretend it never happened, 'just a dream' I tell myself, 'just a dream'.

@Socks Don't knock Simon. Or Merlin. What is Merlin?

Lunch time in the U.S. was this, wasn't it @RThurman?

I joined in the 1960's, when we had to translate our typing into binary to be placed on punched cards, mailed to PongRadish (as GS was known as in those days) and wait two weeks for the characters of the post to appear on-screen back at base, one letter at a time. Usually took about three hours on a good day. We'd all sit around chatting while we waited - oh, how we laughed! I remember, we used to send young Breville round the corner to fetch the sandwiches.

Then there was the time - years later - we had the computer upgraded... it all fitted into just one room! We could rent out the other rooms at a decent rate. (All sounds fine except I remember a distinct odour of burning cheese emanating from those offices...we never could find out what was going on in there...)

I remember when the forums were a BBS and you had to dial your rotary phone for hours until the one phone line in was open and hope you switched the cable fast enough to catch the modem tone. That was of course after you loaded the software off of the tape cassette.

I joined in the 1960's, when we had to translate our typing into binary to be placed on punched cards . . . . .

The original forum (from the 1580s) was actually on parchment, posts were literally posts, taken by horse from village to village, sometimes you'd wait months for a response to a question.

August 1582: "Sir, I could not help but notice that upon selection of the wheel of colours, that which gives gaiety to the actor upon his entrance on stage, it doth crash verily and with great might, only this last spring I doth lost a great project wherein the birds of the forest are to play a game of 'fighting' with great anger."

December 1582: "This demon has been noted and taken into the book of demons, we take hope in making a publicly facing demon list, wherein all witchcraft, demons and bedevilment will be placed in order of a list."

(sorry skipped past comedy replies when I wrote this... damn you scroll wheel)

I joined in January 2010… (it says May 2010 on my profile)…

Here's one of my first threads… my wife was in labour at the time… I made my first app in paternity leave (a baby sleep app called 'Contented Baby Sleep'… still gets the odd download).
