Inkscape document size

Hey everyone! Sorry for the very basic question, but I can't find the answer in any of the other threads/discussions, including those by sprite attack. My question is this, if I want to make a basic actor for a game, and I am using inkscape, whats the best "template" to use? The default? A4? Icon? The game is going to be for iPad and I would like it to be retina.

I don't use inkscape much but I can't imagine there's a set answer for this. When designing images for retina devices, you need to make the image size four times the size of the actor that will use it (twice the height and twice the width). GameSalad requires images that are 72 dpi.

It dosent really matter since you can scale SVG files without quality loss. But if you know how big your background/actor is going to be then I think its nice to use the size of that actor as size for the document. Then you have a space to work within. :)

But again, if you are designing for retina devices and you set your document size equal to your actor size you're going to have a problem.

Although it's an extra step, you can use the Preview application to convert any image to 72 dpi. In Inkscape, I believe you click File-->Export Bitmap and then you'll see the dpi field.

To set dpi program wide go to File/Inkscape Preferences/import Export. Another handy thing to do in Inkscape if increase your threads for faster processing go to File/Inkscape Preferences/Filters. I have 4 cores so I increased to 8 threads. You can read up on this in the Inkscape documentation or google it.
