Gradient Banding Needs to be Fixed!

Hi folks

So it has come up here once or twice before. In game salad when I import my graphics from photoshop which have gradients on when actually shown on the device being played you get banding which looks awful sadly.

GS team can you fix this? Give us any ideas as to when you might be able to get this fixed? I know you like to stay quiet though :)

Anyway this is a real problem and I am certainly not putting my game out with it present, please fix.

If anyone has any possible solution i can try let me know please. Tried a few things but not worked.

Hopefully you guys will see what i am working on soon. Lots still to do but looks smashing on the iPad, graphics have really cleaned it up and make it more enjoyable. More reason to fix this!

Thanks for listening to my ramble.

I had the same issue a grad running up the screen from black to a dark pink - looks great in photoshop and great as a PNG, but then viewed on the iphone it's banding really badly.

I changed my graphic, but a solution might be to add noise into the image in photoshop, I haven't tried it yet, but might work

It is rather odd, xcode and the gradient looks fine, gs and its banded.

What do you mean rob? I don't get any banding anywhere but directly on my device. I don't actually get any banding in GS.

I have tried outing noise on in Photoshop and it didn't work but how much should i actually put on? I don't want the noise being too visible,?

Maybe as a test make strips on your graphics (alpha channels) and apply a different amount of noise to each strip say in increments of 10% and see at what point the banding drops out?

Like JCFord says, one way to fix the banding issue is to do something like this:

In Photoshop, add a layer above your gradient.

Fill this layer with a noise filter, something like TV static.

Set this layer's opacity to 5%, so it is just barely visible.

This will clear up the banding issue.

Hopefully this will be addressed at some point, but if you don't want to wait, this will solve the problem.

Sorry forgive my shorthand, I meant app made in xcode OK on device, app made with GS banding on device.

Ahh ok Rob, make sense now. :)

Yeh ok good idea, I'll give that a shot you two. I will report back with my findings.

Ok Joes(firemaplesgames) and JCFords method worked a charm. Simply follow what is told above and it will just about completely remove the banding so its barely visible.

As said i simple put a made a new layer and put i think 10% noise on it in Photoshop and then changed the players opacity to 5%. Now the banding nor noise is visible making for a great solution.

Didn't know about this trick in Photoshop.
Thanks! I can't wait to try it.
