Here is a test drawing i did today for the first level in my R-type style game. The ship design isn't final yet, but this is a good representation of how i want this game to look. It'll be for the iPad so I'm really hoping to making that screen pop with this game.

If you want a criticism...I would try to create a little bit more "depth" in the graphics...they still seem a little flat and it appears you are looking to get a more "realistic" look to things. Also try to boost your contrast of the ship on the background...the details get a little lost on the black background.
Colors are good though...they really pop...you just need a little more polishing on the depth issue.
I'm still playing with the scale of it all, but so are right, it does look flat now that you mention it.
What i'm hoping to do to add a bit of depth to the background is add parallax scrolling to the different layers, stars and nebulae and planets all moving ever so slightly should help a bit with the depth.
