Attended a talk tonight from some local game developers - Grinding Gear Games - who are doing Path of Exile - it's in Beta at the moment http://www.pathofexile.com/



Over 3 million signed up beta players already. Looks amazing so I thought I would spread the word.

They talked about how they use 2D tiling to build the game. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? You may ask...

Well if you look top down on a level it is made out of squares and they build a 3D shape inside that which has height and is a puzzle block that has many matching blocks. That means they can make semi random generated levels. It was pretty mind blowing to see the back end level design and build of such a big project.

Complex when you have say 10 similar cave wall tiles that are 3D and every single one of them must match on any side and make that look natural. Incredible.

They also talked about how their tiles overlap - and melt together making seamless transitions.

All pretty damn cool stuff - and coming out of little of New Zealand.
