Invasion of the Cutie Bots [iOS Universal] - Work in Progress

Goodnight GamesGoodnight Games NYCMember, PRO Posts: 184
You play as Gritch and Zitch and you defend your creepy world from the onslaught of cute animal robots brought forth from the evil Dr.Whiskers. You slash your way from cute sparkplugs and Candy gorillas and you climb candy coated walls as you try to reclaim your world. Will Dr. whiskers take over your world or will you stop him?

We wanted to make a serious platforming game where you had two characters with different abilities. So Gritch is the big red guy he's got the stronger attack and can also double jump but is slow. Zitch is the smaller green guy whose faster and can attack at a distance but does less damage.

So between those we have a mix in the levels where you need to switch back and forth in real time and we wanted to give a pretty crazy dark but cute environment. Anyway check out the screenshots and I'll keep this thread updated as we make progress.

    Pretty sick! :) An explosion of colours in every scene, it seems. I hope you'll find a way to make the main Character pop some more because he seems to get swallowed up in all the detailed elements on screen at any given time.

    The health meter could also use something like an outline or glow, just to make it still visible when the health is at a low level. You don't really look at all the metrics on screen (e.g. health, ammo count, etc) when you're focused on the gameplay -- you just sort of use your peripheral vision for that, so you gotta make sure it pops and is distinguishable even when you're not looking at it directly.

    Good job, keep it up, can't wait for more updates from you guys! :)

    looks like a rip-off of Mega-Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mario, all in one package.

    The art looks messed up, sorry

    @TheGabfather Dang we had brightened them in order to make them pop a bit better we'll have to go back in and mess with it some. Good call on the health meter I'll get on that.

    @BurberryArts Well then that settles it we'll have to make it pop more. Thanks!

    @OskarDeveloper How so?

    Here's some gameplay footage it's a bit choppy from the recording but we've tried to make the characters pop a bit more. The backgrounds and some art isn't in yet so the black background and the white actors might be a little weird. Let me know what you guys think!

    There's no need for that really, is there?
    Let me know what you guys think!
    I think the teddy bear boss looks pretty epic :D

    Looking good and retro vibing it. Love the big bear and his wiggly nose - so cute and yet so deadly. Haha. Yep some fine tuning to do I am sure but it's a solid WIP :)

    That boss battle's looking pretty sweet :) you're not supposed to be able to pass through that blue barrier, right? At 2:40, maybe you should decide when to spawn one. Maybe give the character a slight push (e.g. shockwave) so you end up to the left of the barrier when it's spawned.

    And yes, that wiggly nose.. haha! :O)

    the boss is kewl.. seems like out of a nightmarish toy horror story. Very surreal. I like the colors and the treatment. At some places the art seems awkward. Like the yellow dots in the background. I thought they were some kind of obstacles before the hero ran over them. Overall nice work and a solid WIP. Get in some more polish in the treatment and i believe it'll be one of the hotties at the app store.

    @quantumsheep Thanks!

    @matarua Thanks! Anything stand out to you from what was posted?

    @TheGabfather Whoop! Yeah that's a problem I didn't notice till you just spotted it. Fixing that right now.

    @kinzua Yellow dots have been killed I was going for a lantern glow but it didn't seem to work out that way. Thanks for the support!

    I should also mention it's running all choppy in the video because like a dummy I didn't set the capture software to high quality. More screenshots soon! You guys rule with all this great feedback!

    @neondevil - perhaps the explosions should be a bit more like the character change - they seem too multicoloured at the moment. I understand the style is very illustrative but I almost would like some proper explosions in there. It looks a little like they are pinatas - not sure how you spell that. It's also a little hard to tell with the choppy recording. Seems pretty good so far :)

    @matarua yeah it's settled I'll have to get a better recording soon. Hmmm I'll have to enlarge those a bit there's an explosion in the animation so that should fix that. Hopefully. Thanks!

    Got a better recording for you guys with the first two levels:

    Sound is still going in so I'll just be doing my best Bob Ross impression.

    Just finished watching Level 1 gameplay, I have to pause it first so I can comment -- HILARIOUS BEAR DEATH ANIMATION!!! =)) Good job with that, did not expect it.

    It's a pretty big game, I hope you guys are already doing Ad Hoc testing, even if you're still doing initial debugging.

    Also for the health pick-ups, I hope you can implement an animation sequence that is more pronounced :)

    Needless to say though, awesome job you guys -- the effort is evident.

    edit: Pretty sick 2nd boss. Definitely looks challenging -- and regarding your comments as to his mood adjusting his attacks, did you mean that or is he just following a pre-encoded pattern based on his health level? :-?

    @TheGabfather Haha thanks! Yeah it's crazy ambitious for our first big game we've been doing a ton of testing sessions as we go both formal with people thanks to the IGDA and just hanging around the office.

    Hmmm def agreed on the health I'll make that guy burst.

    Part of me wants to be like "Oh we did this complex algorithm where he changes mood based on real human emotion patterns!" but yeah when he hits half health he switches to a different set of moves based off an integer and a timer.

    Classic and fantastic.
    Attracts me on the first look at the screen shots.
    Can't wait to deal with the deadly bear.

    The more I see of this the cooler it looks :) I love that the graphics have that kind of Adult Swim vibe going on. Very adventurous game by the looks of it, good luck!

    @neondevil You're welcome.
    When I see someone release a game, first thing come to my head is "Oh man, these guys must have been stayed up late for months!".
    Seeing games released every month gives me motivation.
    Thanks...

    So we're now looking at an official release date of September 22nd if I didn't post it before on iPad. iPhone coming very soon after.
  • Goodnight GamesGoodnight Games NYCMember, PRO Posts: 184
    Whelp we've started final testing and wouldn't you know it the game crashes as soon as you go into any of the levels. Now I'm wondering what the main causes of crashing are because I can't really get much feedback on this from the program itself.

    Another update. We've got some crazy bugs going on, turns out our images were a little bigger than gamesalad could handle and we've got a case of magically shrinking players.

    So we're going to move the release date to October 3rd. I'll have a trailer and some promo codes this coming week.
