Creating Backgrounds

Hey.
Sorry...total newbie question.
I am creating my backgrounds in Illustrator and Photoshop.
I know that there are a lot of different resolution screens for different devices. However is there a standard size I can make a background to work with most devices?
What type of file format should I use to export ......PNG or JPEG?
Thanks

Hi @skunkpuppy the best size would be 2048x1536 this is twice the size of an ipad so will also work with ipad retina. Every other mobile device is smaller so this is the max you should need. Use PNG.

@Skunkpuppy Also save your file using Save for Web and Devices is best. A tip: save your layered PS or Illustrator file as an ai. or .ps file always as well so if you need to change something on one of the layers it'll still be there as separate.

I can't find much in the way of tutorials for creating backgrounds and assets. Have you or anyone have any resources on the subject? Like how to make backgrounds for scrolling and so forth.

@Skunkpuppy I merged your two last posts. If you want to fix something inside your post, please edit it, instead of making another one.

To make scrollable background, just make it very long, and import as few different images. Or you can import just platforms, and obstacles as separate images, and leave one non-scrollable background in the back layer.

Okay, so, based on the original response to this post by @dwibre, it seems I have been creating my images at the wrong size. This question has been posted so many times, and there have been so many different answers, it's hard to keep track. The last post I had read stated that iPad ready - retina enabled images (for lack of a better phrase) should be be at (double) 1280 x 720, or 2560 x 1440.

The max import width or height is 2048, so better keep to that.
