Super Dot Jump: First Screenshots

Hello, I am a new indie developer working with Gamesalad. I started working with it a few months ago, and this is my first project. I am ready to announce this project with screenshots. It is called Super Dot Jump (working title), and it is a 8bit 2D platformer, the first of four games in the series. The game is kind of like a mix between a 2D version of Monkey Ball and the original Donkey Kong. The objective is to get to the star on the other side of the screen, and you must avoid the spikes. I am doing the story, art, music, and level design all by myself. The game's soundtrack will have 6 original 8bit songs. I hope to have this game done and out by mid-2014, and it will start exclusively for iPhone, though I hope to get it to more platforms eventually. There will be a trailer coming soon.

Looking good. However, My only gripe is the white dots around each of the actors. What format are you saving your images in? Seems that the transparency got missed on a couple pixels...

@JarrenH I am saving them as PNG images

Hmm... What program are you using to make them in? (Do you see what I mean though?)

@LoungeGames / @JarrenH - I agree. At first I thought it was just the art style or something, but it does look pretty weird. A fairly simple fix I think though.

    Cool stuff! Best of luck,

@JarrenH I am making them first in this online 8bit art editor and then finishing them in Pixlr Editor(it wont insert the link), which is basically an online version of Photoshop, to crop the images.

Aha, that might be your problem. See, that site saves your images as png, but there is no transparency, and because there is no transparency, when you go to erase the white, you might leave behind some white leftover pixels. I would reccomend trying to create your own art on a transparent background, using different colored square brushes. This would remove the white splotches, and crips up your graphics.

Other than that, looks fun, can't wait to play it!

@JarrenH Do you know of any good free programs or sites for doing that?

No pixlr should work fine the only problem is that it's hard to tell what you haven't erased yet. Try adding a new black opaque layer behind everything so that the parts you haven't erased yet will stand out, then get rid of the black layer.

Sorry for being so negative but i don't like the art, i love retro but it doesn't mean it has to look bland and hard on the eyes.

Take the plain red ladders and the stars for e.g, I'm no artist but they could be a lot better.

If your going to put over a year and a half into this game i think you should hire an artist or try and go for a rev share deal with one.
