So I went along to the London venue of the Global Game Jam. I decided to join a group and do the music and sfx for this one.
Luckily I ended up with a solid group. But then again these kind of events tend to attract good peeps - people who are motivated by creativity and collaboration.
We had someone on our team who has worked with the UK and US governments in the field of disaster relief. We decided that would be a really interesting subject for a game. So we made a strategy game where you have to request aid drops and manage the resources to keep the people alive post-disaster.
I'll link to the game once it's uploaded. For now here's... the start screen! Exciting I know

So we interpreted that as life and saving life.
So when you drag the 'listen' icon onto the map you can see how the people in that area are doing. There are 6 basic things that can kill them. So you get a visual and a sonic snapshot of whether the people are suffering from any of the following:
Hunger
Thirst
Cold
Heat
Ilness/injury
So when you know what the people need you can request aid drops and place them on the map. And also place commands for the people to move. If they trust you they will move, but if they don't trust you they won't follow your instructions.
But if they go to 0 in any of the above stats... they die!
