Yo!

So, a couple months back Basil and I decided to try a little experiment. We'd make a ridiculously easy game, and would spend no more than a couple days doing it. So, we built a game in a day called Ant Smasherz. There was no attempt to be original, and there isn't anything to the game except smashing ants. Well, its been in app stores now for a couple of months, and has actually made a decent amount of money (over $1000, averaging $25/day right now), but today was the first time I saw that it broke the top 100 at Barnes and Noble. I wasn't very proud of this one, but all my my friends/family actually find it addicting, which is beyond me. But, because its actually rising in the rankings, I figured it'd be time to put aside any dignity I had left and tell you all about it. Now, this isn't a lesson in making cheap games and striking rich. I think this is more striking at the base of what can make an app successful. The primary appeal of this game is that I created a difficulty scaling mechanism which is customized for each player, based on how they play. Essentially, the more ants that are smashed, the more that come out. This means that the game is always just the "right amount" of difficult. The core mechanic is simple (smash), and the goal of the game is very straightforward. I think this has done moderately well because of the focus on simplicity and the difficulty scaling mechanism, so from now on, I'm going to try to incorporate these ideals into my future games. But for now, enjoy! I designed this app to be free, but because we don't have Android options, they are paid on those stores. Enjoy your free copy on iphone, or pick up a copy at Barnes&Noble or Amazon! Happy Holidays everyone!
