Survey Poll: Assets on demand

famekraftsfamekrafts Member, BASIC Posts: 834
I am soon going to start a crowd funding campaign for my video game series.

Instead of giving Tshirts etc, I am planning to give 3D game assets, and Game art packs.

They will be done in 3D, both 3D style as well as toon shaded.

I will also video record the process of creating them, and give that as a separate perk.

So before I start putting time and effort, I am researching to understand whether game creators will be willing to fund a campaign for such game assets or not.

the funding price for game assets will range from $5 to $50 depending on the assets and packs.

For the quality of graphics, check out these

I just need to know yes, no, maybe.

if yes, what kind of graphics? You can mention a particular genre or theme.

thanks

Bump friends, any help here? Just a yes or no will help.

I say 'no' only because you are then limiting your potential audience to game developers.

Anyone can enjoy and appreciate a free t-shirt, poster, mug, art print, etc. Only game developers will appreciate the models so you will be limiting your potential backers to a very small, specific audience.

That sounds like a better idea, that way you can have potentially something for everyone. :)

Any more interesting idea for perks?

I voted No. You clearly have a talent in design so instead of spending time on making assets for other people send this time on making a really great crowd funding campaign. If the campaign is good then you will get the funding you require.

Well if you have the time and talent it would be cool to offer actual clay/plastic/some other material/ 3D objects of some of the characters in the the game.

If the game has good quality music offer that as a cd/mp3 collection

Just a couple ideas, If I have any more I'll post.

I am creating a series of game with same continuing plot and story. There will Be extensions of the first game and then totally different genre of games later. Plus there will be mini games and apps surrounding the theme story.

So what if I give game free, not one but three game/app as a perk? I have main game ready, tracing app ready and the extension half ready, submitted for the gshelper contest. Plus there is board game like monopoly coming next on the theme and another mini game as well.

Does that sound good as a perk?

    Sure does sounds exciting!!

"I am soon going to start a crowd funding campaign for my video game series."

"So before I start putting time and effort, I am researching to understand whether game creators will be willing to fund a campaign for such game assets or not."

Do you mean you are looking for funds to create assets, or only sell your assets to gain funds for your future projects? Funding someone to make general assets is not a way to go. I create assets with no funding, I have to invest my own time and money as do countless others (the same goes for past and current game development projects. This is a problem that I have with funding projects like kickstarter, you end up funding someone who is seeking to quit their day job and unknowling run a business for the first time (which tends to spell disaster).

You have great talent and since you have 3D skills and know-how you really out to be applying this towards paid projects or selling these on 3D marketplaces such as those found on Unity's 3D asset market.

I am good with 3d but not so good with video making and recording. So that's a bit of a concern for me.

No my concern is about my game funding, I want to add the assets as special perk. I am already creating assets for the gs marketplace. That is not my concern. I am looking for funds to create my game. I am doing it all alone and it takes time.

I am in india and people here do not think game developing to be a career, I have struggled for a decade. I want to make games as a career not design and create assets or publish books, which I have been doing from past few years. The problem is if there is no return with gaming as now days most games are free, people here think i am wasting my time.

So it's like either I succeed in game designing financially or my family and people around me will force me to quit game designing all together.

Gaming is my passion and I became a designer because of it. I have struggled with every game engine there is because I am not a programmer. Only game maker and now gs has worked well or me.

So it like do and die for me, either I make a great game series and get some money back to show people around me that gaming is a good career too or I lose my chance and probably keep making assets and publish book and do other designing jobs and forget my dreams, where I will never be satisfied.

@wickedsunny as I can see you are very good in 3d Animations and modeling. Why dont you try to find full time job. There are many companies available in Bombay, Pune, Hydrabad and many other places. I have many friends working in studios and earning 50-60k/Month. First start with fresher and later move forward. Gameloft is in pune and I dont think its require to give you Gameloft intro.

I don't want to work for others ideas, I have been doing that in and out for last ten years, been working for clients here and there. I want to follow my dreams, the reason why I became a designer, to make my own games.

You can say when my end comes, I will not die peacefully if I don't make one financially successfull good game. I need closure. It's like a bone stuck in my neck.

@wickedsunny There are studios where they listen their employee thoughts and ideas.
I am not telling you to do permanent job in studios. Just explaining you that if you are going in to studios you can learn the industrial work and quality. That experience is very important. I dont know became a designer is your obstinacy or something else. Sorry dont feel bad after watching your gsh7 entry its not 1% matching with industry standard. Time line is different point. It look like in past 10 years you are living in well and do not want to come out from it. As friend I just want to give you advice. Come out from well and there is very big sea.

Dont feel bad I am trying to show you the fact... :) Just telling you because you have potential

I love the idea of the board game as a incentive to donate, that would be a very cool item!

Nevermind creativeapps you won't understand. Anyhow we are going off topic. This post is about whether I give free assets or not. Please let's focus there.

A physical board game or video game one? Physical board game will cost about 40 to 50 $ with shipping,I have calculated the price, so if I have to add it as a perk, the cost will go much higher about 70 to 80 $. Will people will be ready to pay such a price? The research I have done shows board games in USA costs about 40 to 60 $ range.

I was thinking of making it as a video board game.

  • jamie_cjamie_c ImagineLabs.rocks Member, PRO Posts: 5,772
I was thinking the board game specifically, more than the video game. I'm sure the board game would have to be at a high tier but it would be cool, to me.

I'm sure the video game(s) would be fine to offer too, the benefit of that would be you could certainly offer those at some of the lower tiers.
  • famekraftsfamekrafts Member, BASIC Posts: 834
Hm, let me see what can be done about the board game.

Anyone has anymore ideas for the perks?

I think we can all appreciate your passion, but when talking about passion for games and game design, you are preaching to the choir here. As far as funding future endeavours, are you set up as a business?, because the track you are going on about is going to require you to satisfy legal accountability (regardless where you reside).

Dreams and good intentions are bumpy roads that can offten lead to nowhere. Accomplishment, dependability and sensible philosophy are virtues mandatory for this industry.

You mean to say as a sole proprietor I cannot publish a game or look for funding?

And I am not preaching, I am basically telling you my views, irrespective of whether you or any one like it or not. I have a right to say what I believe in.

I think you are reading more into this than is necessary, there is no need to be defensive. No one is censoring you.

Sole proprietorship is fine. I'm not trying to shoot you down, but point out things you need to consider if you are wanting this independent self-made career as you have stated. I'm just asking a question here see?

When I say you are preaching to the choir, I mean; you are telling everyone how passionate and serious you are about games and game design. Yes, we know. I think most of us here are.
    That's all ;)
  • famekraftsfamekrafts Member, BASIC Posts: 834
That's fine man, I am not trying to be defensive. Any perk ideas you can give?
  • RPRP Member Posts: 1,990
I'd say for starters, smaller assets packs that are universal. Stuff that can be used in various types of games and that are not so noticeable when used/reused by multiple designers.

Small stuff like buttons, control sticks and d-pads (with your 3D design flare). Other common items like doors (with various positions), bullets, gears and light switches etc. Just add more assets to the pack for each level perk (or as one perk option).

I think any non digital perks are going to be more trouble and costly than they are worth (although they sound cool). Maybe in the future you can reconsider it.

what would you get for a $5 donation in comparison t what would get for a $50?
  • famekraftsfamekrafts Member, BASIC Posts: 834
    edited December 2012
$ 5 will be like simple buttons or basic stuff or just one asset. $ 50 will be like a pack of assets, or all the assets packs combined as a super pack, or backgrounds pack etc. There will be many different packs to choose from so it can be bought multiple times if required.

@Debugdesign you can give any suggestions?

No from me as I am hard core 2D even if it is 3D it's still 2D for me. Nice models tho. The colour maps, not so much, poly-maps alright for basic stuff. Crowd fund with stuff that crowds like. Not niche. Crowds are the masses, they like cliché things. I saw Angry Birds Cookies just the other day. Sigh. Anyway, I make all my own artwork, got that sorted, I need help on the theory, the code, the logic etc.
