Man...I knew this day would come all too soon...mediocre apps don't have much of a chance anymore on the AppStore...hopefully GS will get the new engine out soon.. :|

This is a better layout for the user not the small developer... I think we will have to wait and see if it effects your sales... But I don't think it's good,,although it may lead to better quality apps.. So who is ready to release a new app? Today or tomorrow and let us all know..

I released an app on Wednesday and got no boost whatsoever like normal on new releases. That was the day iOS 6 came out. It never was on the new release list there, I checked. Plus all the problems the first day. I doubt a majority of people updated to iOS 6 right away, BUT I be the most frequent app buyers did update quickly hence the low sales.

It seems that there are still paid new release lists in some but not all categories. Example- Entertainment has them if you go to featured then categories and there is a "Paid" list at bottom, but if you go to featured-> education there is no such list just a few Apple Created lists. I also noticed that the new releases seem to be cut off after about 100 apps or so, I think earlier this week was 50, so you will not be on the list forever especially if your app is named "Zorp's Revenge" or some low alphabetical name and you release on a day with lots of apps.

At any rate, I do think the new app store is much slower and much more difficult to navigate. Maybe the speed will improve.

@greenrhyno if you read the last part of my post. I said to market your app in a way that people will seek it out. There is no implication in my post that magically people would seek out a game. I said to MARKET your app in a way that makes people search for it. How you market is up to you, examples can be Twitter, Facebook, websites, a flyer in a store, subway, bus stop or high traffic areas. Maybe advertise on you car?? And I never said N&N is a valid launch strategy...re read my post. But if people don't market their games then getting there is a nice way to gain some exposure. For some reason it appears my post struck a tender spot on you?...why I have no idea since I never even mentioned you. But I appoligized that your feelings were hurt :(

@ironDan - No problem man. No offense taken. I just don't agree with your other post or this one. That is why it is a forum. All the ideas about social networking and flyers are fine, but not will give you the exposure the new release list will. The apple store itself has always been the best way to gain exposure for an app. Plus the search function isn't the best for finding an app these days. you can search for an exact app name and sometimes it won't come up until far down the list.

Marketing is ROUGH, I've put up a banner ad on AppSafari ($500 for a month) and it did nothing noticeable for sales. One of my apps got featured in the New York Times Technology section and was on that main page for over a week and it just helped get a few hundred extra sales that one week. Blog reviews, Twitter campaigns etc don't have huge effects from my experience compared to that new release list. It was the best way to get noticed and jump start app sales.

But yeah, I only mentioned your name because I was responding to you and disagreeing with you not because I had something against you or that you hurt my feelings. Don't lose any sleep :)

You didn't answer my question- ever been N&N? I've only had apps featured in category N&N but never the main one. I think if Category N&N starts showing up in the mobile app store that is one positive change. Not sure if that is happening yet.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that 'New' in the App Store is now a list of the 'latest' apps ranked in a 'featured' format, BUT, in each category the 'Paid' and 'Free' sections are listed in a release date format so I am guessing apps will be listed there as they are released? I cross referenced the iTunes store (which lists the actual dates) with the iOS store...

Keywords can help a little... but the best description, the best icon, and the best game in the world won't matter one bit if no one ever knows it exists. This change takes away the initial momentum a great app, by a small developer, can achieve out of the gate. That initial momentum gets the app in front of SOOO many eyes, and can generate just enough downloads to push the app into a better list that is browsed by even MORE eyes. A great app, with an enticing icon, screenshots, and description can go far with no advertising costs. A developers hard work can pay off soley on it's own merits... not having to buy your way into the spotlight. This is no more.

This will force the need for advertising, something that the little guy can't afford to waste money on. $50, $100 in advertising? Pointless. A waste. 250 accidental clicks and it's gone in 30 seconds with not a single download. $1000, $10,000 in advertising? No indie dev can afford or sustain an advertising budget like that. Doesn't matter that they may be the most talented dev coming up with incredibly interesting apps, no one will ever know unless he ponies up some real cash first.
