Pause vs. Change Scene

I have been using pause pretty extensively to help me manage scenes / gameplay in my game.
When you land on a planet, it pauses.
from that pause menu, there are 5 options, 4 of them pause the game again.
for the most part, this works great. However, one of the scenes makes it crash. I think its the images for animations in that scene specifically.
Is this because I'm using pause?
I was thinking thats the problem, since pause would typically be temporary, I'm pretty sure everything from the previous paused scenes would persist in memory.
Is this assumption correct?
