Greetings fellow game makers, I would like to start a development thread for the first game to be released by Outer Reach Entertainment LLC in partnership with Liquid Gameworks, called 'dotRadius'. It will be a very simple reflex based game designed specifically to be played on a touch device, and the music will be an integral part of the experience. I will be posting the progress when we hit each of our milestones, but for now I'd like to post this little concept video. It outlines the transition from the splash screen, to the title and finally to the main menu:

Special mention should go to Quantum Sheep, who helped me with my very first prototype. You da man! :D

Thanks @Braydon_SFX and @LiquidGameworks (get back to work! :P). I just finished updating Outer Reach's official Facebook page by the way:

so it would mean a great deal to me if you all 'liked' it. Any like I get from a fan page will get a like back from me, after all we're in this together ;)

I think this is one of the coolest menu systems I have scene with GS.

@NovicaStudio Just wait until its finished. :) We have a lot of subtle movements that'll really make this menu shine. I imagine the next tidbit you all will get to see is the next stage of the menu, but I think @basil81 may be planning on letting you all have a peak at one of the featured music tracks. Stay tuned!

I have high hopes for this game! ;)

Seriously though, the concept Basil came up with, though simple, turned out to be very addictive even in the early stages!

I'm sure it's moved on lots since I looked at it, and look forward to playing it!

    Thanks sheep, means a lot!

Nothing to show as of yet because everything is still rather rough, but I thought I'd mention that we decided to submit dotRadius to IGF for next year's event. We're all paid up and just need some screenshots and a video to be official. Of course we aren't counting on being selected as finalists, but we believe this is an added incentive to make the game as polished as we can. Needless to say, we're working our butts off.

We're hoping to have an adhoc build to distribute to testers by this weekend, and at the latest early next week. Right now I'm deciding on how to make the game visually more interesting while still maintaining a very minimal style as is evident in the video posted above. Everything from the shapes to colors is under scrutiny. Gotta make sure the game looks just right.

In the sound department, the music will be based on the growing retrowave scene, so it'll be chockful of synths and 80s goodness. The basic idea is to make a game that would have been created had current technology been available 25 years ago. In essence, what chiptunes might have sounded like with modern soundcards.

Once the graphics are locked down and the gameplay's been properly tested, I'll feel better posting screen shots and possibly some captured video of the gameplay itself. Also on the way will be some samples of the music, which we'll have linked from soundcloud.

    More updates soon!

We're all submitted up for IGF, though using an earlier build than I would have liked due to the server issues with Web Publishing lately, but hopefully that will be fixed soon and we can upload the newer build. Here are some screenshots of the game as it currently looks:

A gameplay video is on the way, soon as get to a point where I've stopped mumbling and mincing words...

Ok, as promised here is a video for you guys of the gameplay with a bit of commentary from me. Best viewed in full screen.

Development is moving right along, so what you see in the video is just the tip of the iceberg. Lots of cool stuff yet to be added, so stay tuned!

looks really cool--simple (in a good way) and fun. Very sleek!

If I may make a suggestion: would you consider making each tapped dot (that is part of a combo) produce a slightly higher pitched note similar to how piano keys get higher as you go left to right? I think some audio feedback like that would encourage/remind the player to keep the streak alive as long as possible.

I like the look of this, very interesting.

Saw you're post over on FB, seems addictive. Good luck with this guys :)

@Kangavark That sounds like an excellent suggestion. One of the original ideas for the game was to have the dots play a random melodic note, so that every time you played it was a moving melody. But an audio cue that the player is being successful would be great. Basil and I will play around with this. Thanks for the idea!
  • floydianspiralfloydianspiral Member, PRO Posts: 308
I would further that suggestion... if you pick a pentatonic scale and have the dots be assigned a random note on that scale you would end up making unique melodies as you play that would never sound out of place. Then when you do combos you could trigger an actual 3-5 second melody. The potential for making this a musical experience is right there, and I think it would help the game a lot as the laser sound gets annoying very quickly. Instead of having it be a piano it could be a synthesizer, drum patterns, etc. Each level or difficulty ramp up could be a different sound. Just throwing out ideas!

I submitted to the IGF as well and I wish you good luck! How did you go about uploading, is this an IPA or an html5 game?
  • basil81basil81 PRO Posts: 103
@floydiansprial 's suggestion is pretty much exactly what I had in mind regarding the musical aspect of the game. We've touched upon it briefly in this early version but we wanted to first ensure that the core gameplay was compelling enough on its own merit. Both floyd's (combos trigger unique melodies) and @Kangavark 's (combos causing the pitch to rise) suggestions are quite excellent and we will see about how to implement them. We're loving the feedback so far and can't wait to show you guys further progress.

To answer floyd's question regarding the IGF submission, we submitted an IPA as this game is to be eventually released as an iPad game (then at some point ported over to other tablet devices, but of course we all know that iPad still rules the tablet market).

Again, many thanks for the comments! :D

Have you had any word on if your IPA submission worked? They linked to an Xcode tutorial and obviously we can't deal with that in GS so I just made a normal provisioning profile with my certficate, published with GS, brought it into my iTunes and then clicked "view in finder" on my app which pointed me towards the IPA uploaded. Is this what you did? I sent them an email asking if they got mine to work but haven't heard from them yet, was just wondering what your process for the IGF submission was. Oh mine was iPad too : p
  • LiquidGameworksLiquidGameworks Anchorage, AKMember, Sous Chef Posts: 956
@floydianspiral We submitted our IPA using the Payload folder technique, as informed by Testflight website. As IGF also links to testflight, I'm guessing any IPA that works for testflight will work for IGF.

Here's another video with some progress, but mainly I wanted to showcase 2 of the tracks that will be in the game. These are by our talented composer ElectroNick, a more than worthy addition to the Outer Reach team.

Okay, that is awesome! Just the idea and simplicity of it is amazing! Can't wait for this to be released so I can take a whack at it!
