this is awfully close to a game I released back in late 2009. exact same concept and name. only thing different are the graphics.

@jonmulcahy That's crazy, I guess great minds think alike! To be frank however, that's a bit like comparing Crysis to the original Doom, I think it is fair to say I have done more than iterate on your game.

@jonmulcahy I don't think you can blame @arcade15 for taking the same inspiration as you, and (3 years later) building one of the better Portal-esque games.

I look forward to playing this myself!

@Motionless , my thoughts exactly, and thanks!

I primarily drew my inspiration for a 2D portal game from this: http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php

Taking liberties with a unique story, art style, features (like customization) etc.

Thanks @crazycam99! Removing that code now.

I'm not blaming @arcade15 for taking the same inspiration. I'm blaming him for making the same game with the same name, then having his friends leave negative comments on a 2 year old youtube video, and posting his trailer as a video response to mine. not exactly a stand up way of conducting yourself.

This looks and plays awful, currently trying to get a refund from apple. If you want a real portal game for your iPhone or iPod touch check out Vortex - The Escape!
This is the worst app ever. It looks like a 5 year old made this in art class. I would be extremely embarrassed to have my name associated with this crap if I were you...

    I just took YEXY3RLLJ7KR.
The game looks nice (I haven't been able to play it yet) but I noticed in your trailer you have text saying "A Mobile Game Like No Other" While I understand your point here, it is just not true! It looks like took inspiration from Jon with the name, YouTube comments and gameplay. I'll leave a more in-depth review once I give it a play.

    Best of luck,
    Henry

Thanks @redsky, removing that code. As for @jonmulcahy, I have no idea what you are on about, as my youtube channel is youtube.com/arcade15.

There are hundreds of games on the app store containing the word "Vortex" and I already stated that my inspiration drew directly from the wildly successful flash version of portal (http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php).

After spending the last 8-9 months on Vortex, I'm pretty insulted to have any comparisons made between my app and his, as the two are obviously very different in terms of gameplay, art and sound direction, and features.

Your two friends commented on the YouTube video trailer I released 2 years ago. They also commented on your trailer video commenting on how awesome it was, and then you posted your trailer as a video response to mine.

There are hundreds of vortex games in the app store, but only one portal style game, and it's mine. Your app and mine are extremely similar in gameplay, the only difference is the sound and graphic style. Sme of your level designs are extremely close to mine. Your level select screen is almost the same layout.

Now your insulted to have your game compared to mine? My game came out over 2 years ago. My game was freatured by apple on 4 separate occasions. My game has a legitimate app store rating, I didn't have my friends and family give fake 5 star reviews.

I'm mad you released an extremely similar game under the same name. but you obviously don't seem to care. I guess I'll just contact apple.

...that's a bit like comparing Crysis to the original Doom, I think it is fair to say I have done more than iterate on your game...
The above comment is a bit silly. The youtube comments are extremely harsh. The artwork in this game are okay and look just like the flash version.

You can rehash games all you want. No one owns an idea. I just got a rather disheartening vibe from this thread. @jonmulcahy noted the similarities then was told his game was the Doom to your Crysis. Kinda harsh again.

If anything, both games are the Wolfenstien 3D to Valve's "Portals." And I fail to see much difference between either game and the flash version other than the different art. I don't think neither can claim the moral or creative high ground here. The only thing either of you should probably consider in ratcheting up the civility a few notches.

That being said. Both games look fun. :)

I could care less about the content of the game, as I said in my original post, it's basically the same game with different graphics and some gameplay tweaks. My problem is with the name. This is a portal inspired game called vortex, that came out 2 years after my portal inspired game called vortex came out.

Then there is the behavior of his friends leaving bad iTunes and YouTube commends about the game because I said something.

It's poor form to promote your own game using disparaging remarks on someone else's youtube trailer vid. And it certainly doesn't help your case that it wasn't inspired/copied/whatever from Jon's game.
  • CreeperWareCreeperWare Member Posts: 43
It's really sad to see that @jonmulachy derailed this thread to this extent. It's even more depressing to see that you are taking shots at me for making a game better than yours in every regard, as well as claiming I drew inspiration from your game when I made it clear where the idea came from.

As for deluding yourself into thinking that you own the common english word "Vortex", that is for Apple to decide, but I for one am upset this rampant trashing of my game was permitted.

Especially when the majority of GameSalad games are blatant rips of traditional game franchises (such as the much praised SCZ: Beyond Dead's rip of Metroid) or the daily rip of Mario-esque platforming.

In either case, I would still appreciate any feedback on the gameplay of my game.

I never said my game was better than yours. My problem is you released a game with similar gameplay with the same name. I never said you drew inspiration from my game, it's obvious it came from the game Portal, just like mine did.

I don't own the word vortex, but I do have a prior art claim on the game / subject name.

I don't care about the content of the game. I care about the name.

Plus, you seem to ignore the smear tactics you and your friends employed. Thas the only rampant trashing I've seen in this thread.

@jonmulcahy, I responded to Apple's request on clarifying the matter as follows:

    "To whom it may concern,

Jonathan believes he owns the exclusive rights to the common english word "Vortex" , a word used in many games and utilities on the app store. He also believes that he owns the exclusive rights to make games with those types of mechanics, when in fact several others on the app store, such as the games "Wormholes" and "Gateway" use the same mechanics.

My game, "Vortex - The Escape", not only has a significantly different title from Jonathan's "V is for Vortex" but also has a significantly different art style, sound design, and gameplay mechanics that greatly differentiate between his game and mine.

Conclusively, I believe his claims are invalid, designed only to hamper sales of my application based on the irrational and inapplicable delusion that he has intellectual property rights over these generic concepts."

I believe this is in Apple's hands now, with the outcome determining who owes whom an apology.

I also refuse to respond to your warmongering attempts by claiming that I am responsible for the actions of my channel's 600+ subscribers and 366,000+ viewers.

taking shots at me for making a game better than yours in every regard
Subjective remarks like these derailed the thread.

    This comment:
this is awfully close to a game I released back in late 2009. exact same concept and name. only thing different are the graphics.
(while not a graceful statement, still not completely incorrect, aside from the name comment.)

    Then this reply:
To be frank however, that's a bit like comparing Crysis to the original Doom
    (subjective)

    Then *downhill

    :-?

Honestly, you both made a "Portals" homage on the mobile plat from. You may as well both used a name like "Wormhole: the Vortex of Portaling."

Both games look fun. Pats on the back to you both, on me!

There is a significant lack of chillaxing going on here. :P

@deadlyseriousmedia My thoughts exactly, we both overreacted and, in all probability, I will just probably have a mod close this thread so I can open a new one.

Otherwise, I appreciate any and all I feedback I have received and look forward to more regarding my trailer, art style, and gameplay!

Oh yes, the trailer was tres professional! :)
  • jonmulcahyjonmulcahy Member, Sous Chef Posts: 10,408
So care to comment on why you and your friends are still posting negative comments on my game on YouTube and in the app store? That is what derailed your thread. My original post was posting out the similarities in the game, and then you had your friends start posting bad reviews.

If you want to be treated as a professional, start acting like one.
  • jonmulcahyjonmulcahy Member, Sous Chef Posts: 10,408
Two more gems from @arcade16's team:
umadbro? That someone made a game that shits all over yours?
They have a point, this game is pretty awful lol. Isn't a trailer supposed to make you want to purchase an app? This does the opposite of that XD
  • CreeperWareCreeperWare Member Posts: 43
@jonmulcahy, I will explain this again, in detail.

I have been doing product reviews and videos on youtube for years, and as a result have a (albeit relatively small) but devoted fan base of people who support my ventures.

I can not be held responsible for their actions.

I do believe that they are acting like children, but unfortunately, most of our target audience, along with youtube's primary user base are probably kids.

With Apple's approval, I hope we can set this behind us @jonmulcahy , and I wish you the best of luck with your current and future apps!

I dont believe that. So your saying your so called "fan base" is always checking the gs forums and looking for what you posted, and happened to see this thread? You obviously are telling them to say stuff.

I think this thread has run its course, closing it.
