I just completed this online tutorial using Adobe Illustrator and I was able to make this logo for my business. Let me know what you think:

I, personally would go about designing your own logo by hand first. Just get a load of pieces of paper and a pencil and just keep sketching. Look at other app developer's logos to try and get a feel for what you're going for.
If you're more set on using the Illustrator tutorial route, that's cool and I Googled a few for you to maybe take a look at:
Change this one to a C and maybe change the colouring
I like the use of colour and the font is this one, just maybe alter it a little to make it more personal
This is very App friendly as a Splash screen/site logo/etc
Obviously change the lemon. Maybe to a building block, a lego block, something like that?
As for the one you did, it's not bad, just doesn't come and slap you in the face as an amazing logo (the blur on the original was way too high to add depth of field, just looked blurry).
Hope that helps somewhat.

But I reckon the colours don't really match,
the "L" in Play is odd
the fonts don't match..
just odd but OK.

When I think of a logo, I think of super elegant, simple, and very little writing. Yours doesn't match my interpretation of a good logo. Just my opinion.
With that said, I do like the theme of your logo with the culture play and an attempt at some colors.
@jckmcgraw maybe logo is not the right term...perhaps it's more of a banner for my website.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep working!
The L is just too blurry for me. I also think the green background is too simple. If you want to keep it simple, you should add a bit more "spots" and sections to it.
@jckmcgraw I removed the blur from the L
I always learnt that when making logos and business stuff - always use font that is simple, easy to read..
Your "culture" is not a good font to use for business type matters, and just does not look good.. imo
