My new app, iHeight, is in the app store now!

app description:

Measure the height of any object with iHeight.

Simply point your iPod (or iPhone) at the object you want to measure, and iHeight will tell you how tall it is.

Imagine you are about to climb a big tree and you want to know how tall it is. iHeight is the solution! Simply enter the distance you are standing from the tree, point your iPod at the top of the tree and iHeight will tell you how tall it is as if it were magic!

Want to know how high your model rocket goes? iHeight will tell you. Enter the distance between you and the launch pad. Aim your iPod at the rocket as it blasts away. iHeight will tell you how high it goes!

Houses, tall buildings, bridges, radio towers, statues, doorways, and more. Measure them all with iHeight!

Does it really work? YES! iHeight uses a complex mathematical formula to calculate height. A special page is included with the app which explains the equation.

Use whatever unit of measurement you prefer: feet, meters, inches, miles, yards, hands, cubits, klicks, fathoms or light-years... iHeight does them all (up to 99,999 units).

How high will you go? Find out with iHeight!

    a brilliant idea to use the accelerometer and the tangent function (I assume..)! congratulations :)

    `iHeight uses a complex mathematical formula to calculate height.`
    Mmmh, I'm taking a guess because I don't have the app:

    height = distance * tan(accelerometer y)

    Good idea...
    I remember doing this in High School math class. We had to find out how tall our school was with geometry calculations, a tape measure, a protractor and a string.

    Not sure if it will be a successful pay app though on its own...but a free version would probably do well. My suggestion is build about 10 of these little math apps like this and bundle them in a cool little "real-life geometry" toolkit. Stuff like an land area calculator...metric convertor, etc.

    Then you might have a winner at $.99...stuff a geometry student my use to help them with their homework.

    @Zilla: "LOLLLL" :))))

    I'll review, but I'm having a little concern about functionality. Maybe I'm not doing it correct, but it also seems the instructions and interface are a little unclear.

    First of all, I assume this is feet, not meters? I will assume that because I'm an American and that's just how we are. :-)

    Okay, I try to measure a door (that I know is 7 feet). I stand exactly 10 feet away and enter "10." The instructions say to hold the ipod level, and the instructions illustration show holding it at eye level. So I'm aiming at about 2/3 up the door. (Shouldn't I be aiming at the base?)

    So as per instructions, I sight along the iPod to object and tap the screen to HOLD measurement. ... okay, then what? There is a "continue" button. I tap it and the numbers are unlocked again.

    Back to the instructions illustration, it shows holding the iPod at an angle pointing at the top of the object to measure. So, I assume I need to tap again sighting at the top. I'm not getting anything like the 7 foot answer I would expect by following the directions... which seem incomplete.

    Am I being dense? I would love to rate this app, and I've tried to give good reviews to everyone on GameSalad, but unless I get it to work, I can't in good conscience.

    This sounds like a good idea for an app and I'd like to get it functioning. Thanks.

    Study your competitors:

    EasyMeasure (uses simple trigonometry to calculate the distance to an object using the camera...)

    Thanks for the reviews guys!

    @design219, Did you read the instructions? You can use any unit of measurement, feet, meters, or yards. The object that you are measuring needs to be at least three times as tall as you, like a building or a tree. It sounds like you are using it right, just make sure that you are pointing the ipod or iphone at the top of the object, it may help to look at the "learn more" button inside the instructions page, Good luck!

    @Zilla EasyMeasure isn't as accurate because it uses that iphone's camera, also EasyMeasure can't be used with and ipod touch because it doesn't have a camera, but iHeight works with the iphone and ipod touch! Thanks Guys!

    Uh, ok, but it says "doorways" in the description... you might want to modify that. I wasn't trying anything 3X as tall as me.

    Thanks, I'll give it another go.

    Okay, I think your instructions are still a little unclear (or I'm just slow), as it says "hole it flat" and not "point at top of object". I thought it was some sort of two step process: hold it flat and tap, then continue and sight at top of object and tap.

    It's the "hold it flat" part that doesn't jive with [hold it at an angle pointing to the top] idea.

    Not meaning to be difficult, but if this is an issue, it would be helpful to you to be aware.

    And then again, maybe it's just me. 8-)
