I think you can make sounds with Garageband, is that true?
Also, what kind of mic do I need to get good sound effects?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Garageband allows you to make music. If you need to use your voice for sound effects, though, and have a mac, you should use garageband for effects. Overall, garageband is best for songs. Besides your voice, the main way people create sound effects in garageband is by using loops or ilife sound effects.

I did some research to see if iLife Sound Effects are copyright free. I am NOT COMPLETELY SURE but here is a quote to support the ability to use them in your game:

"When you purchase iMovie (or Garage Band) you also purchase a royalty free license to use the sound effects, audio loops, ect. even for commercial uses. Apple holds the copyright but you have been given permission (by your purchase) to use the material in your creations, and you should have no copyright issues." - http://groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!category-topic/youtube/creators-corner/x_wtencfhbk

If you find they copyright free for sure, you can find them on your mac:

    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects

    Hope I could help!

Different types of microphones are used for different types of sound effects. However, the most useful mic for this overall would be a small diaphram condensor microphone( SDC as they are known for short). Many manufacturers make these types of mics.
In the cost effective end of this spectrum, but still with professoional sound quality are Octava MK-012 and Rode NT5 to name a couple. However, being condensor mics they need phantom powering. You will also need a half decent preamp to record with any microphone and get good results. If you would like to learn a bit more about different types of microphones, their uses, and about phantom power, reading this tutorial article may helpful for you:

No worries. Have fun. Try to get the best mic you can afford because in the end you will get better sound quality if you spend a bit on the mic.

Here is an extremely excellent recorder. It's called the Zoom H4n Handy Portable Digital Recorder by Zoom. I use this to go around and collect all my live sounds. It has so many features. It also has 2 mic's that can twist to either record in 90 degrees or 120 degrees. It picks up even the slightest sound. Also, this is the same recorder that lots of the professionals use. It is excellent for the price. Please check it out, you won't regret it!
