Experience with In-App full game unlock?

It's probably been discussed several times but have any of you had any experiences with making a game free, and then let players unlock the full game within the app? And how does this option work with promo codes?

What's the general consensus? I'm really considering going this route with my upcoming game, Count Purple.

Good question. I am thinking of doing the same with my apps and would be interested to hear the feedback.

IMO if you were to go the IAP route, you would have to have faith that your game will completely hook the user, enough to buy the rest of it. If your gameplay is mediocre, then I would stick with making it paid.

I guess the question is how do you get trial?
Are people more likely to go on a buying spree based on icons, descriptions and reviews in the app store to buy; or are people more likely to want to try a game before they shell out their hard earned $0.99?

I have made much less from upsales as opposed to out right selling. I think to have the upsale route work you need to have a really great hook in your game otherwise you are letting people decide if the game is actually worth 99¢ as opposed to if it looks worth it.

Thank you for sharing your experience. That is really helpful. I have been considering all different sorts of approaches to monetizing my games, and maybe I am over thinking it...
