Hi, well after finishing End of the Earth for the iPad, I plunged straight in to another file, this time a straightforward utility for the iPhone, called A Simple Shopping List.

My other half requested it so I thought I'd design it for her; then I thought i might as well put it up for review when its finished (about 3 weeks time); and only then did I check on the store to find at least seven, if not 8 or more shopping list apps already there! (I should have guessed...) (Plus @RKS is making a shopping list type app shown in a thread a couple of days ago but that will have a notepad, etc as well; a bit different again from mine).

So as not to copy anyone, I'm also making mine a bit different from all the other shopping list apps (at least, I'd like to think I am); the prominent features will be ease of use as well as multi-language.

For interest, i've two more very straightforward apps to do after this one, then once they are done and dusted, I'll plunge back into my other game as well as the interactive multimedia project, with earnest.

So, in the meantime - and back to now - here's the first progress video for A Simple Shopping List. please note that it's just the GUI at the moment; there's no calculator or list-making facility yet (this has got to be incorporated from another file very soon); the title headings in the app are old - someone else has used that, so I'll have to replace that with my new title.... and, I can't think of much else to say about it.... (apart from sorry about the video capture prog. picking the volume louder sound at the beginning, on my splash screen).

So for your interest, here is the first progress video of the iPhone app called A simple Shopping List - GUI only at this stage:

Hi @RKS, it's good that we've taken different approaches! Yes, I took the approach of a maximum of 4 lists, each with up to 80 (or 100, I haven't decided yet) items that can be saved automatically or the complete list deleted, if required, to make another list.

Best of luck with your app; I think it'll be "different horses for different courses" with both our apps; hopefully we can have equal success together!

Thanks for pointing out the private video (I could have sworn I made it open with the link - semi-private, whatever it's called -) anyhow, I'll check that out now.

Hey Gyro, nice work :) How are you getting around the keyboard input? - Since it seems you can type unlimited at the moment. You'd obviously want to limit a list name down to a certain number of characters only

    Looks great, gyro!
I'll be using this one for sure!

I'll keep my eye on this thread for any updates!

Thanks guys - @RKS, @Chobbiface and @Braydon_SFX - glad you're liking it; I'll be posting the next progress vid. in about a week for interest.

@Chobbiface Hi CF, what a good question! I was thinking of adding to the keyboard title, something like "max. 40 characters, one line" but that's clumsy really; it's a shame GSC hasn't more advanced text manipulation, but that's the way it is... I'd be interested in a solution if there is one (and by the sound of it, so would you!) :-)

@gyroscope - At the moment, the only way I have it is to modify the size of the display text actor - so it cuts off anything else beyond say 5-6 characters or however many you want. Not ideal, but the only real work around really. Don't really want people to be able to name their character Supercalifragilisticexpialidociousx10 in-game ;). I would love to find out any alternative methods, but GS definitely needs to improve this function :)

Hi @CF, I'd buy you a pint.... no two ;-) if you could tell me how to change the size of the text display which is automatically generated by the Keyboard Input Behavior; is that what you mean? If if you do, is it so obvious you're amazed that I don't know how to do it?! THe display seems automatically generated by this behaviour, with nothing to affect its attributes...

@gyroscope - sorry I should have been clearer, I'm just using the display text behaviour inside an actor, which outputs my keyboard input. What I'm changing is actually the actor (with the display text behaviour) size and width e.g. I know an actor that is width 100 height 28 with a display text behaviour inside can output approx. 12 characters on display (it does depend on which letters you use) - try funky monkey (including the space) ;) Type anything more, it will cut off.

At 1:27 for example in your video - where you name the lists, I presume you have a display text behaviour inside each list? Though I can see you probably don't wanna reduce the width of the strips as they all go uniformly across the screen - maybe you could overlay an actor on top of each strip with the display text behaviour inside each?

Yes, I'm doing the same as you; and I'd like to keep the name strips the same width, so no "mileage" there really; it's a real shame we don't have more control over the text attributes, not only in Keyboard Input Behavior but Display Text Behavior as well; but maybe that's on the cards for one day in the future, let's hope. :-)
