19.2 MB is too big for Apple!

WGSgamesWGSgames Member Posts: 22
Hey guys,

I just submitted my 19.2mb app to apple and got an email from them saying "the binary size exceeds the download limit". My app will still get approved but it will be over 20 mb when it goes onto the app store.

Does anyone know what the max size should be to keep it under 20mb before we submit it? I'm not sure how much smaller I can make my app but Im trying to get as many sales as I can get so I really want to get it under 20mb.

@WGSgames - yeah I got the same message with a 19.1MB game. I got it down to 17.7MB and then it was fine.

Do you already use imageAlpha? If not that will help you.

@HoneyTribeStudios no I haven't used it but I'll check it out. Thanks!

The good thing about it is that you can convert 24bit png images to 8bit without a noticeable loss in quality. Even if you have varying degrees of transparency in your image. If you use it on all your biggest images you'll prob save a good few MB.

and try optimzer from DBA, cut my game size almost in half(but you have to pay for it though)

Me personally - I'm just ignoring the 20 MB limit. I'm totally okay with some of my apps hitting 25 MB or more if there's a good reason to do so.
If it means more content & better graphics quality, it could be worth it. It's a trade-off. I am trying to optimize my graphics, of course, but even so, several of my projects are so vast that keeping them under 20 MB was never a realistic option.

I've seen some gigantic apps that have done well anyway, particularly in the point-and-click first person adventure genre.
'Myst' and 'Return to Mysterious Island' are both over 300 MB and they both sold well... same with 'Riven', and that one is over a gigabyte!

Same sort of thing with the recent app 'The Lost City', which peaked at #3 in the iTunes App Store last week... it's a 40 MB app.

Don't assume that passing the 20 MB limit necessarily means your app will be a failure.

@calvin9403 thanks for the advice. I got the optimizer and it worked! Cut my project down from 19.2mb to 16.7.

Remember that if your project is 19mb or 18 it will be "too big" for apple because they add stuff on their end so makes your project file larger.

@HTS convert to jpg will be even smaller, the lowest quality in jpg the file is tiny

just go though the file and use textwrangler/bbedit and change png to jpg

    @ThemistoklesV

Apple will not reject a 20MB app, it won't even reject a 800MB app . . . . It will just warn you that because your app is over 20MB it wil not be able to be downloaded over a phone connection, so will only be available over Wi-Fi.

I am sure they will raise this limit soon, I am guessing 50MB (?).

@calvin - yeah using jpgs can be useful. But keep in mind that if you're using resolution independence you won't get the auto generated half size images from jpgs. So a third gen device would be using the retina sized jpg. But if you're overall RAM usage is very low that might be fine.

I just submitted my iPad app and received the same binary size limit message, I was confused why they say this for iPad as well ? Should I be worried ?

Hi, any help appreciated. Does apple just send out this message for both iPhone and iPad ?

"I was confused why they say this for iPad as well ?"

What part of it confuses you ?

when I previously submitted an iPad app over 20MB I never received this message and I thought it was only for iPhone as iPad is always wifi, no ?
    cheers :)

@zzap64 The 20mb limit is set by the cell phone networks. Apparently they weren't too pleased when Apple changed from a 10MB to a 20MB limit as they struggle to handle the demand.

So it's the same for all devices. iPad can either be wifi only or connect to a 3G network too - they have different iPad models.

But not sure if iPad binaries get the auto message too.
