How to upload ad hoc app from iTunes to iPad?

Hi, yesterday, I published my iPad game via GSC publishing (for the first time) to get an ad hoc for my iPad.

I've seen TSB's video about getting the .app file onto the iDevice via Xcode but when I got to the fireworks/congrats screen of the GCS publishing, there's the option to Test - ("Select this button to start testing your packaged .app on your iOS device. This option will immediately sync your .app file through iTunes and make it possible to run the game on your iPhone, iPad, or iPd Touch.")

So the .app is now sitting in the Apps section of iTunes Library but I can't find a way for my iPad to see it, sync/download it from there. any help/suggestions please? (By the sound of it, this way should be more straightforward than the Xcode route if I could get it to work; if not, it's back to TSB's video...) ;-)

Yeah once you publish it out you just open iTunes click on apps and drag it in. Then go to the list of apps in the iTunes view of what's on your iPad and make sure your new app is checked for syncing.

Thanks FBS, I think I've done all that...

Not sure what you mean by dragging the app in? Into where as it's already in the iTunes Library and from there it won't let me drag into Devices. Also, sorry for my slowness (!) but in the iTunes list view (as well as any other view) I haven't any checkboxes showing... (also, clicking Sync doesn't do anything...)

I've just gone into Apps page of Devices and see that there's Sync Apps there... my ad hoc is showing but to select it for download it seems you have to sync/replace the whole library onto the iPad. It seems all or nothing....

Make sure you use the itunes that the ipad is synced to. Also, you can have what's on your ipad sync to the itunes and not replace it.

Using same devices on different itunes will cos it to be reset.

You can do it if you use home sharing or you create a new user on the other mac and log into itunes with the other account. Then just download that libary from the cloud .

Cheers guys but I've only got one iTunes and an iPad (although an iPhone is registered there somewhere). I make sure it's OK by closing iTunes and let the iPad open it so I know that bit's OK. It's all synced up and as I say, pressing Sync doesn't find it.

FBS, how do I select my .app only then I'm wondering for download? Going into the Apps page of Devices, I've tried selecting Sync Apps. When I do, I get a warning dialog: "Are you sure you want to sync apps? All existing apps and their data on the iPad "My iPad" will be replaced with the apps from this iTunes Library. Even then most of my apps disappeared from the Library when the Cloud came along...

When I did go for it - pressing the Sync Apps button, the Capacity shrinks to almost nothing, waiting for me to click on checkboxes to add to the iPad pages... overwriting all that's already on there.

I'm stumped... I thought I'd try the Xcode route but then found out I haven't got Xcode for lion (I recently upgraded) so that'll be an 8 hour wait while it downloads... I guess i'll just have to be patient and wait until then, unless you guys have any more advice, thank you.

You were writing your answer as I was writing my comment, FBS:

OK, I've signed in for Home Sharing, thanks. I'll try closing iTunes and reopening via the iPad and go from there... Thanks for your help.

I'm slow this morning: I guess I need iTunes for the iPad which I don't have installed...

Edit: that's the same as App Store surely.... well, I really don't know now, so close and yet so far....

I'll wait 7 hours for Xcode to download and do it that way. Thanks again for help.

Hi FBS, that certainly cleared it up for me , thank you for going to the effort of making a video, much appreciated!

OK, when iCloud came into existence, all of my apps disappeared from my Apps Library. Now I only have about 10 apps (now including my ad hoc app) which have been subsequently bought/got from the Store.

So when I click on Sync Apps, it only shows - in my iPad Preview window - those 10 apps - and only 3 pages -, and alarmingly, the Capacity indicator at the bottom of this page goes right down. So if I press Apply, I'm almost certain that it'll wipe all that's on my iPad and just install the 10 apps....

Also, most of those 10 apps haven't their checkbox selected automatically which means I'd be uploading them all even though they are already on the iPad...

I guess that I need to somehow get all my apps back into the Library then everything should be OK as per your video....

Found it, FBS, thanks, so I'm about to click the iCloud symbol Download All... I seem to remember trying this before and was surprised to see that the full app needs to download, not just a link to the iCloud version, (I stopped it that time) so I'm in for a wait... I'll report back in three or four hours when they've all downloaded and I've finally got the ad hoc on the iPad! :-)

Edit: I keep meaning to sign up for Skype... when I do I'll add you to my contacts for certain, FBS.
