I was wondering if there was a way to limit the people who can download the app that I created. I am not looking to make money, the app that I created could potentially simplify the job that myself and a few others do, but we arent sure if we want it public. Is there any way to do this?

Yes, you can distribute it without it being on the app store with ad hoc builds, or if you have the developer account for business, I think there is a special way for those accounts to distribute without the general public getting involved. I'm not sure how to go about it, but you can distribute the app without it being on the app store.

also, if you create a privateProject you want to be used on Mac platform

you can publish as Macintosh build/platform (you will need an icon and a yucky big screenshot … I use a transparent.png)
and chose not to have Apple App Store distribution
you have no hassle with Provisioning Profiles …

the app will display on a Mac in the correct format/size you designed it in (iPhone: 480x320 landscape; iPad: 1024x768 landscape)
change icon in "Get info" (copy and then paste in the icon area there)
then you can distribute via email to those you want to have it …

I do this for one of my beta testers that doesn't have an iPhone
