Size, does it really matter?

SandbirdSandbird Member Posts: 69
I am planning to make a big project. Using RI and probably lots of levels with HD graphics. Just playing around with the basic functions and animations my gs file is abut 36mb.
What i am saying is that my end project will probably be around 100mb+.
I've read in the forum to try an keep the size under 20mb cause some companys dont allow too much downloading of 3G etc etc..Does it really matter if the end result is big? I mean infinity blade is like 900mb why should a 100mb file be a problem?
To tell you the truth i dont care if someone has iphone 1 or a ipod touch 1. Tough luck. I care about iphone4+ market. So is there trully a reason for the 20mb cap?
Thanks

It doesn't matter if the game is appealing enough to have a big draw.
Infinity blade is amazing, it was $8 and people didn't care because it was well worth it.
But you gotta remember, not everyone has access to wifi.

I don't recommend that. You might not even be able to upload it to the server. I had that problem before. I had to dramatically reduce the size of the images just to test the app.

@Sandbird … the 20mb cap is not Apple's nor GS's … it's the carriers that limit the size of each download.

if someone buys your app in iTunes, the purchase will go through …if the buyer is doing so on their device and if the carrier has limited download size to 20mb … your buyer will be notified that the download will be available when they are using their desktop.

haven't run into this lately, maybe because of iCloud … maybe because haven't downloaded anything large lately.

    Alright. My turn.

To the consumer, at least, as far as size goes, the width of your project and images is far more important than the length. Your project's length really only matters if you feel the need to impress other developers, and really won't affect much the playing experience, or your consumer's ability to have pleasure in "beating" your game.

Thanks for the answers guys, but i still have a couple more.
    1) Can i instead of putting resolution independence, just submit 2 different games ? One for retina displays and one for lower resolutions ? That would decrease the file size i think.
    2) I agree with @Asymptoteell, but not to impress anyone. I just want the game to look crispy clear and nice...and that requires HD graphics and lots of them.
    3) Seriously now, i got a cap also on my mobile provider..but not so low as 20mb. Who doesnt have a computer these days ? Just download the thing from itunes and upload it to your device...are there so many people in the states that dont have a computer oO ?

    1) yes you can, but I wouldn't recommend doing it, it can cause to a lot of bad reviews that will make people hate your game.
100mb of a game is fine, and should not be a problem, also you can reduce the size of your assets using tools like image optim (for images) and audacity(for sound)- both are free. (also consider looking at DBA images tool)
    2) sure you agree with Asymptoteell cause it was a joke mate :)
    3) the limit on the device is only when you download the game on a 3G network , if your device is connected to wifi, there is no limit to download an app.

    Cheers
    Roy.
