Anyone with impressive sales in android market or amazon?

I am getting good sales on Amazon more than Android which has surprised me.

Do you need to have some advertising to get the app noticed?

No.
However one App (non-GS) has been out for a while and had quite established sales on iTunes and I think these translated across well. It has had exposure across the web (the odd review) and high downloads.
The recent GS game we released is increasing in free sales and the paid sales are outdoing (currently) the 5% rule which makes me pleased.
I really have been surprised by the Amazon market - the customers on there seem to be more likely to purchase product than on the Market (at least in my current experience). They rate harder as well.
All of this changed for me just after Christmas. It all increased at this time and has so far held well. Perhaps the Kindle was sold a lot at Christmas and this is the afterglow?

Our App seems to stand out well because of the smaller number of apps on Amazon. I think having a free version is a good idea also.

There are primarily free sales I am talking about but the % of purchases to free sales is higher for me than on the Market and possibly even iTunes. I can only hope this maintains and Amazon release Kindle to the world!

Right now there's no monetization for android platforms, so by having free app , do you link them to a paid app ?

Exactly...free version with link to paid version. It aint as good as iAp but it is something.
The GS app we are selling is: 'hellozoo lite' on Amazon, ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006VI5G72 ), it has embedded links to 'hellozoo'...so far I am at 6% sales to free downloads.
That may not last but it is encouraging.
