Is this against the rules?

Can I make a system on my website to generate codes that the user enters into the game to unlock content ? This would draw traffic to my website. Im sure this is allowed, but could I charge for "premium" codes? I would imagine apple would not like this because they already have in app purchases?

    I can only imagine if it isn't actually against the rules, then it's like counting cards: you can do it, but the app acceptance crew at apple just might take you into a back alley and teach you a lesson.

    IAP is a pro feature.
    I would suggest selling cheat codes, but either way how would you keep people from just posting the codes they buy on the internet?

    @Asymptoteell Haha thats pretty funny.

    @Pixelgun I think I am going to make download codes that are free. I still think its kind of fun for the user to actually type in the code and get something in return. Kind of like redeeming a gift card. I could release a new code every week or two weeks or so (and have them pre built into the game).

    @JohnPapiomitis thanks for sharing that thread. I am most excited about the performance enhancement features

    @mikelowe

    think Apple might not like actual codes on webpage to be entered in a game

    I had thought of doing something like this …
    but instead of numericalCodes have a question like:
    " The color of the flower on the About page is?" then have user type in text, not digits.
    or "How many green trolls are on the home page?"
    or "What color is the pixie's hair on the newGame page?"

    IMO this gives user a more intriguing action … and makes them pay more attention to the pages on your site.

    I would worry too much about piracy of answers to the questions … user would still have to buy your game to use the code/answer!

    Im pretty sure if you were charging for a code apple would shut you down. They have an Any money you make we get a cut type policy. Free codes im sure would be allowed. But…. If the codes are being randomly generated theres no way to actually tie those things to your game. you would have to preset each and every possible code in your game before ever being able to do something like that. I wouldn't bother to be honest. and if you don't already have pro which is needed to go to a website from your app. Its going to be a ridiculous pain in the ass for users to actually go generate their code.

    @MotherHoose that is a very interesting idea. I like it. I also had another idea of giving out the codes as an incentive for joining an email list? And send the codes out weekly. As of now, the codes are text strings. They are phrases related to what they do.
    @tenrdrmer I do not intend on selling codes anymore. I think it would be much better to give them out for free. They would not be randomly generated either because I realized that is impossible. But you do bring up a good point that it would be difficult and annoying for the user to find my website... I am considering not doing this.

    what about using the system time in your code. If you use the current date it would only allow the code to work for that one day.

    @mikelowe like that code for joining an email list!
